Notka biograficzna

Andrzej Stepnowski, professor of  Gdańsk University of Technology (GUT) at Geoinformatics Department, scientific  specialization in geoinformatics, sonar systems and satellite navigation systems
Graduated from the Faculty of Electronics at GUT in 1964 with a Master of Science degree in electronic engineering. In 1974 he defended PhD thesis and  obtained a doctorate in underwater acoustics. In 1992 he obtained  habilitation (DSc. degree) in sonar systems . In 2001 he received the professor of technical sciences title, and  since 2006 he has been a tenured Full Professor at GUT.
At Gdańsk University of Technology, he was, among others: Acting Head of the Department  of Hydroacoustics (1984-1986), Head of the Department of  Environmental Acoustics( 1994 -1998), Vice Dean for Research of the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics (1996-1999), Vice Rector for Research of GUT (2002 – 2005) and Head of the Senate Committee for the International Collaboration of GUT (2008 – 2011). Professor had also several international and foreign assignments, as an expert of FAO at Rome (1974), Fellowship holder in Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) (1980),  International Academic Consultant at IPB (Indonesia) (1992), visiting professor at Technical University of Nova Scotia (Canada) (1986-1988) and in Middle East Technical University (Turkey) (1990/91). He is the author of over 200 scientific publications, including 2  monographs, a couple of chapters in monographs and 8 patents. He promoted 7 doctors of Technical Sciences and 2 doctors with habilitation, and  is recognized as the creator of  Gdansk Scientific School of Geoinformatics.Professor A. Stepnowski is also author of several implemented ICT systems including ECOLOG II  in Canada, GIS systems EchoBase  and Visual Bottom Typer in USA, European Space Agency  PECS system „Safe City GIS” and mobile satellite  navigation system for visually impaired in urban area “Voice Map”, prized by the gold medal on  Technological Innovation Fairs in Brussels in  2014.He was the secretary general of the Polish Acoustical Society (1983-1986, 1990-1993) and since 2008 he is a member of the Acoustical Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Since the  beginning of 2016 he has also an expert assignment in the Polish Space Agency POLSA. He is laureate of the Polonia Restituta Officer’s and Chevalier’s Cross, Master of Polish Technology Honorary Title, the Gold Cross of Merit and the Medal of the National Education Commission. He also received several of the Polish  Minister of Science Prizes.
