What does obtaining the status of a research university by Gdańsk University of Technology really mean? What challenges is GUT facing in the coming years? Which research areas will be the priority ones? - on 11 December, during an open, ceremonial session of the GUT Senate, prof. Krzysztof Wilde, rector of Gdańsk University of Technology will present the university’s development strategy related to obtaining the status of ‘Research University’. Jarosław Gowin, deputy prime minister, Minister of Science and Higher Education, will be the guest of honour.
Gdańsk University of Technology took the first place among technical universities and the second place in the country in the competition of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education within the ‘Initiative of Excellence - Research University’ program. Due to obtaining the status of ‘Research University’ Gdańsk University of Technology will receive an increase of 10% every year (for at least seven years) in the subsidy from the central budget, which in total will translate into over PLN 200 million. In the ministerial competition, universities were evaluated by an international team of experts. The media emphasized the fact that the ministry's initiative is a turning point for Polish science. Rector and Senate of Gdańsk University of Technology invite all employees, students and doctoral students to participate in the ceremonialsession of the Senate of Gdańsk University of Technology on 11 December at 11.15 in the GUT Hall in the Main Building.
During the ceremony, prof. Krzysztof Wilde, rector of GUT, will present the development strategy for Gdańsk University of Technology within the ‘Initiative of Excellence - Research University’ program.Due to such high increase in the state subsidy, the priority research areas, whichwill be presented during the session,are going to besignificantly better financed. ‘We will also work on new paths and development tools for academic teachers, both for those who conduct scientific research and those who only deal with didactic activities. Although both groups of employees will pursue different goals, new professional opportunities will open up’, says prof. Krzysztof Wilde, rector of GUT.
During the ceremonial session of the GUT Senate, academic teachers will be awarded the following Rector of Gdansk University of Technology Awards for 2018: 1st degree and special awards, as well as lifetime achievement awards. Medals of Merit for Gdańsk University of Technology and Honorary Medal of Professor Emeritus of Gdańsk University of Technology will also be presented.
