Gdańsk University of Technology, as the region's biggest technical tertiary institute, has been setting trends and directions of the development of research oriented towards the challenges of the contemporary science and economy. The results of research conducted at the University are applied in industry and help improve living standards, responding to both individual and social needs.
Gdańsk University of Technology is also a member of research consortia which combine the potential of outstanding scientists from various universities and other scientific institutions with that of entrepreneurs who wish to implement new technologies. As an example may serve the INTERIZON – Polish ICT Custer, which associates the entities of 13 business sectors. The vast majority are IT, telecommunications and electronics companies, but there is also a number of training companies and education and scientific entities – schools, universities and research intitutes. According to INTERIZON mission, cluster creates an ecosystem of innovation for the development of enterprises of the ICT industry and for achieving joint objectives of the Cluster Members. (website).
Another undertaking of this kind is the project of the Polish Synchrotron Consorium that brings together 36 universities and research institutes interested in conducting research using the SOLARIS synchrotron. The Consortium was established in 2008. Its first goal was to build a Polish synchrotron light source. Currently, consortium members support efforts to raise funds for the development of the SOLARIS – National Synchotron Radiation Centre and participate in decisions about the direction of scientific research carried out in the SOLARIS Centre (website).
