Prof. Janusz Mroczka Became Doctor Honoris Causa of Gdańsk University of Technology

A world famous specialist in electronics and metrology as well as a charismatic speaker, whose lectures always attract huge audiences, Prof. Janusz Mroczka, became the 41st GUT Doctor Honoris Causa. A celebratory, open session of the Gdańsk University of Technology Senate dedicated to granting the honorary degree to this outstanding scientist took place on Wednesday, the 23rd of January.


"I would like to thank the Gdańsk University of Technology academic community for accepting me as its member. Every time I come here I am impressed by the determined, future- and youth-oriented strategy of my new alma mater. As a token of my gratitude I promise to serve GUT in achieving its goals and aspirations", pledged the professor.

Prof. Janusz Mroczka established the Polish school of electronic and photonic metrology, as well as created original methods of acquiring, processing and modeling signals necessary to construct measuring instruments used in scientific practice. His work consists of 420 publications, including 118 in JCR-listed journals, 8 patents, 29 research grants and 24 supervised PhDs. According to Google Scholar, the professor is cited approximately 250 times a year!

For decades Prof. Mroczka has been cooperating with scientific teams from the GUT Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics. It was the employees of this faculty who applied for granting him the honorary degree. Prof. Jerzy Wtorek, the Dean of the faculty, delivered the laudation.

"Professor Janusz Mroczka is an outstanding representative of the world of science, especially technical science, a renowned metrologist, a full professor, a corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, an internationally renowned researcher, a tutor of many generations of scientists and engineers, a person who is consequent and effective in his actions, but also a person with a great sense of humor and critically analyzing his own achievements", Prof. Jerzy Wtorek said.

After the ceremony of granting the honorary degree by Prof. Jacek Namieśnik, the GUT Rector, Prof. Mroczka gave a lecture on selected problems of fractal aggregate modeling. The Gdańsk University of Technology Academic Choir performed during the session.

The professor's scientific interests encompass cognitive process methodology and applying advanced methods of analysis to gather detailed knowledge about studied objects. He is a full professor at Wrocław University of Science and Technology, as well as a Doctor Honoris Causa of Lublin University of Technology and Opole University of Technology.

Prof. Janusz Mroczka became Doctor Honoris Causa on the basis of the Gdańsk University of Technology Senate Act No. 219/2018/XXIV, dated the 12th of December 2018. The entire procedure is described in §8 and Annex No. 2 to the GUT Statute.
