Microphone Array Project (Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme)

UNIVERSITY:

  • Technische Universität Berlin.

TYPE OF CERTIFICATION:

  • Academic certificate.

SUBJECT AREA:

  • Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, Others.

CATEGORY:

  • Summer & Winter Schools.

OFFERED TO:

  • MSc Students, PhD Candidates/Researchers, BSc Students, University Teaching Staff.
Description

Microphone arrays, often referred to as “acoustic cameras”, are essential tools for the spatial separation and analysis of sound sources. In this interactive course, students learn the basics of acoustic array signal processing and apply this knowledge in practical projects.

In small groups, participants from European partner institutions design a microphone array measurement campaign based on a scientific question of their own choice. The course takes place in a blended format, with mandatory online phases and a five-days onsite phase at TU Berlin's Acoustics labs, and is divided into three parts:

  • Learning the basics and formation of international project groups,

  • Planning and preparation of individual measurement tasks in the groups,

  • Practical implementation of the measurements and analysis of the results.

Participants might be eligible to receive a scholarship from their home university for their participation in the onsite phase in Berlin. Please find more information on scholarships under "Further Information".

Expected learning outcomes

General knowledge about microphone array measurements:

  • Understanding of hardware setup and measured quantities,

  • Knowledge of possible applications.

Deeper understanding of acoustic signal processing, particularly:

  • Acoustic beamforming methods in the time domain and in the frequency domain,

  • Dealing with noise, stationary, and/or moving sources,

  • Incorporation of sound propagation models,

  • Recognizing limitations and method-intrinsic artifacts.

Practical know-how regarding implementation and evaluation of array measurements:

  • Design & scheduling of a measurement campaign,

  • Realizing and documenting the experiments,

  • Data evaluation using microphone array signal processing software.

Prerequisites
  • Knowledge in Acoustics,

  • Basic programming skills.
