Gdańsk Tech Students Succeed at ETH Zurich Datathon 2026
We are proud to announce the remarkable success of students from the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics, representing the "Gradient" Student Scientific Club, which operates within the Department of Computer System Architecture (KASK).
On April 17–19, 2026, our students participated in Datathon 2026 at ETH Zurich. As Switzerland's largest machine learning hackathon, the event was supported by global industry leaders, including Databricks, AWS, Claude, Axpo, HRT, QuantCo and RobinReal.
Following a highly selective qualification process, two teams from our university were chosen among the 215 finalists. The participants were: Zuzanna Warchoł, Jacek Ejsmont, Maksymilian Kruk, Igor Jankowski, as well as Jerzy Szyjut, Hubert Malinowski, Dominik Lau, and Maciej Krzyżanowski.
During the competition at ETH Zurich, both teams tackled an advanced Data Science challenge set by UN OCHA (United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) in collaboration with Databricks. The task involved building a system to identify mismatches between humanitarian needs and available funding across global crises. Expert guidance during the project was enriched with an online meeting with Mary Keller.
We are thrilled to report that both of our teams reached the TOP 5, and following the final presentations eventually securing 2nd and 3rd place on the podium.
This achievement would not have been possible without the financial and institutional support from the Department of Computer System Architecture (KASK), prof. hab. inż. Paweł Czarnul Kierownik Katedry KASK, and the ENHANCE Alliance. Furthermore, in recognition of their excellent work, Databricks awarded both teams 100 CHF each to be donated to charities of their choice.
