Gdańsk University of Technology Advances in U.S. News Ranking, One of the So-Called "Big Four"
The Best Global Universities ranking, published annually by U.S. News & World Report, evaluates institutions of higher education from around the world, with a primary focus on research performance and academic reputation.
The first edition of the ranking was published on October 28, 2014, and included 500 universities from 49 countries. Since 2016, it has been issued as an official annual publication, and its scope has expanded to include 1,500 universities from 81 countries. U.S. News was the first U.S.-based publisher to develop a global university ranking.
In the most recent edition, Gdańsk University of Technology was ranked 989th, marking an advancement of 90 places compared to the previous year (1079th place in the 2024–2025 edition), and representing the institution’s best result to date in this ranking. This also marks the first time Gdańsk Tech has been listed among the top 1,000 universities worldwide in the American ranking.
In addition to the global ranking, regional rankings are also published. In the European universities ranking, Gdańsk University of Technology placed 352nd, improving from 392nd in the previous year. Among Polish institutions, it ranked 6th, up from 9th.
The ranking methodology remained unchanged from the previous edition. In the initial phase, 2,346 institutions were selected, including the top 250 universities in the global reputation survey conducted by Clarivate™, as well as all institutions that had published at least 1,250 research articles indexed in the Web of Science database between 2019 and 2023. In the subsequent phase, universities were evaluated based on 13 indicators grouped into three categories:
- Bibliometric indicators derived from the Web of Science™ databases (including publications, conferences, citations, and international collaborations) – weight: 65%;
- Global and regional academic reputation, based on a survey conducted by Clarivate™ among scholars worldwide – weight: 25%;
- Scientific excellence, measured by the number and proportion of publications ranked in the top 1% most cited in their respective fields – weight: 10%.
