The Iconic Scholars program is a tool for implementing the Strategy of Gdańsk University of Technology for 2020-2030 in the field of building scientific excellence by increasing the international recognition of the University and its researchers.

What you stand to gain?

  1. financial support for attracting outstanding scientists with high international recognition from other research centers in the country and abroad - the Attracting Outstanding Researchers action;
  2. financial and organizational support for young university employees with great potential to achieve the status of a highly cited scientist according to Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers - Prospective HiCi Researchers action;
  3. financial and organizational support for young University employees with great potential in the field of authorship or co-authorship of articles with the Highly Cited Paper status - Prospective HiCi Paper Authors action;
  4. financial and organizational support for young university employees with great potential in the field of authorship or co-authorship of articles in Nature or Science - Prospective N&S Paper Authors action;
  5. financial bonuses for employees, doctoral students and students of the University for achievements of particular importance for the Program objectives.

In justified cases, the Action may be implemented as a supplement to grant programs of the IDUB project (e.g. NOBELIUM).

Financial and organizational support for activities in points 2-4 may include funds for the purchase and maintenance of research equipment, creation and maintenance of the beneficiary's research team (including employment of young doctors, doctoral students or students), organization and fees for research team management courses and other justified forms of support.

Applications for support for activities under points 1–4 may be submitted by vice-rectors, deans, chairmen of councils for disciplines and scientific fields, and coordinators of PRA centers based on declarations of will of potential beneficiaries. Support is granted by the rector on the basis of negotiations and expert assessment carried out by persons indicated by the rector.

The following types of achievement bonuses are introduced:

  1. bonus for obtaining the Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher status (PLN 100,000 gross for the laureate),
  2. bonus for authorship or co-authorship of an 'article'-type publication in Nature or Science (PLN 50,000 gross for the author or co-authors from Gdańsk University of Technology),
  3. bonus for the publication of Highly Cited Paper - according to the Web of Science (PLN 30,000 gross for the author or co-authors from Gdańsk University of Technology),
  4. bonus for obtaining an ERC grant, in which Gdańsk University of Technology is the host institution for the main researcher (PLN 30,000 gross for the main researcher).

How and when to apply for a grant?

The application for the bonus is submitted by the dean competent for the place of employment of the potential beneficiary or an authorized representative of the group of beneficiaries. The bonus is granted by the rector.
In the case of beneficiaries who are employees of Gdańsk University of Technology, the bonus is paid as an addition to the remuneration for the implementation of the project, and in the case of students and doctoral students of Gdańsk University of Technology as a scholarship from the Gdańsk University of Technology's own scholarship fund.
