The authorities of Gdańsk Tech have taken another significant step towards the establishment of the Gdańsk Tech EcoInnovation Center, which will be one of the most important units in Poland focused on the development of pro-ecological solutions and environmental technologies.

At the end of the year, Gdańsk Tech announced a tender for the construction of the Eco-Innovation Center (CEI) along with its equipment as part of the implementation of the project "Construction of the Eco-Innovation Center of Gdańsk Tech in Gdańsk." The facility will be built on the site of the former hydro hall, which is currently being demolished.

The construction of CEI will enable, among other things, the implementation of innovative and pioneering solutions aligned with the idea of developing eco-districts and ecological spaces. These will be developed by the academic staff of Gdańsk Tech (mainly from the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering), who will conduct research projects for the ecological development of construction, industrial, and transport infrastructure. The investment will also serve as the main seat of the EkoTech Center, one of the four newly established Research Centers at Gdańsk Tech, created after the university obtained the status of a "research university" under the Ministry of Science and Higher Education program "Excellence Initiative – Research University."

Ecological Technologies in Modern Laboratories

The tender includes the construction of a new building for the Gdańsk Tech Eco-Innovation Center (CEI), designed as a detached, four-story building with a height of just under 18 meters. The above-ground floors of the building will mainly contain conference and training rooms, laboratories, and office spaces, while the underground floor is designed to accommodate a garage and storage rooms. The scope of the contract also includes the renovation of part of Siedlicka Street.

– CEI is intended to be a modern building serving educational, laboratory, and research functions. We have designed it to be environmentally friendly, incorporating innovative, advanced technologies – says Mariusz Miler, Chancellor of Gdańsk Tech. – We estimate that the construction of the center will cost approximately PLN 100 million. A significant portion of the funds, nearly PLN 20 million, has already been secured from an EU grant.

Obtaining additional funding for the construction of CEI from EU funds was possible thanks to the cooperation between Gdańsk Tech and the Pomeranian Development Agency – a regional government unit of the Pomeranian Voivodeship, which handles European funds and supports economic undertakings of high regional significance.

Areas of Activity of the Gdańsk Tech Eco-Innovation Center

The planned investment will provide research and development facilities for the key specializations of the Pomerania region, namely construction, eco-energy, and environmental protection technologies. The center’s activities will focus on the following areas:

  • Environment: water and sewage management, waste management, environmental protection through the development of wastewater treatment technologies, water management and flood control,
  • Energy: energy efficiency, renewable energy sources,
  • Construction: energy-efficient residential and transport construction, structural foundations for energy installations,
  • Mobility: road and rail infrastructure, urban transport, development of ecological forms of transport,
  • Revitalization: public and resident-friendly spaces, energy-efficient construction, revitalization of degraded urban and post-industrial areas,
  • Education: training future professionals focused on creating innovative ecological solutions,
  • Industry: transfer of knowledge and competencies to the economy.

The deadline for submitting bids to participate in the tender expires on February 11, 2021. On the same day, bids will be opened and the tender potentially awarded. The main criteria considered when selecting the contractor will be: price (60 points), completion time (30 points), and warranty period (10 points). The investment is expected to be completed no earlier than the turn of 2022 and 2023.
