For the following five years, Gdańsk University of Technology will be cooperating with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) within the scope of student and doctoral student education, and joint research.

On June 29, Gdańsk University of Technology (Gdańsk Tech) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) signed a letter of intent concerning potential areas of cooperation between the universities. The document, binding for five years, was signed by Prof. Krzysztof Wilde and Prof. Leszek Kalinowski from the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering (Gdańsk Tech), proxy of the rector for the doctoral program conducted with the University of Illinois, and from UIUC by Prof. Mark Anastasio (on-line), dean of the Faculty of Bioengineering and Prof. Wawrzyniec L. Dobrucki, vice-dean for doctoral studies from the Faculty of Bioengineering.

The agreement enables the universities to cooperate in various fields, including education of first and second-cycle students of bioengineering (master of bioengineering), as well as doctoral students, joint research grant execution in bioengineering, bioinformatics, biostatistics, chemistry of materials and medical chemistry, chemical engineering, biomechanical engineering, applied physics and other.

Joint educational and research activities, research exchange and student exchange, participation in lectures and online classes, and organization of research symposiums were listed among the potential areas of cooperation.

– Partnership with such a recognized university as the University of Illinois confirms that the importance of Gdańsk University of Technology increases on the international map of science. I am convinced that our cooperation will be broad and effective, and that the academic communities of both universities will benefit from it – said Prof. Krzysztof Wilde, rector of Gdańsk Tech.

Prof. Mark Anastasio joined online and emphasized his enthusiasm about the opportunity of collaboration with Gdańsk Tech and discussed master degree programs in bioengineering, artificial intelligence and machine learning and the doctoral program at UIUC in bioengineering, which are among the leading programs of this type in the United States.

– We will start research cooperation from identification of research groups at both universities that will be able to do joint projects and apply for research grants together – announced Prof. Wawrzyniec L. Dobrucki.

– Simultaneously, we are preparing a master degree program, and subsequently a doctoral program. We are thinking about the possibilities of double diploma and discussing the legal aspects of this solution. We want our students to have the opportunity to study and do research at UIUC, but also to come and conduct research at Gdańsk Tech – added Prof. Leszek Kalinowski.
