Participation of the President of the Republic of Poland in the Opening Ceremony of the 2025/2026 Academic Year at Gdańsk University of Technology

The solemn session of the Senate of Gdańsk University of Technology will mark the beginning of the new academic year at our university. The event will take place on October 1st at 11:15 AM in the Main Hall (Aula) of the Main Building. We invite everyone to watch the live broadcast on the university’s official YouTube channel.

Among the distinguished guests attending the ceremony there will be Karol Nawrocki, President of the Republic of Poland; Barbara Nowacka, Minister of Education; Mieczysław Struk, Marshal of the Pomeranian Voivodeship; Emil Rojek, Deputy Voivode of Pomerania; Piotr Grzelak, Deputy Mayor of Gdańsk; Aleksandra Kosiorek, Mayor of Gdynia; Michał Banacki, Deputy Mayor of Sopot; Archbishop Tadeusz Wojda, Metropolitan of Gdańsk, as well as members of the Polish Parliament and Senate, and representatives of local government authorities.

The ceremony will also be attended by the university authorities, members of the Senate of Gdańsk University of Technology, academic staff, doctoral students, and undergraduate students.

Due to the organization of the event, traffic disruptions and parking difficulties may occur on the university campus, especially in the vicinity of the Main Building, as well as within the building itself.

Information for attendees:

  • Visitors arriving at the Main Building are requested to use the main entrance, located on the side of Narutowicza Street and the square in front of the building.
  • Guests who have received an invitation and confirmed their attendance are kindly asked to arrive at the Aula no later than 10:45 AM.
  • For those interested, 100 places have been assigned in the lobby outside the Aula, where the ceremony will be broadcast on a large screen.
  • The event will also be live-streamed on the university's homepage.
  • Guests will have access to free parking on Fiszera Street.

Opening Ceremony of the Academic Year – Online Broadcast

Programme of the Opening Ceremony

The ceremony will begin with the inaugural address delivered by the Rector of Gdańsk University of Technology, Professor Krzysztof Wilde, who will officially open the new academic year. This will be followed by an address from the President of the Republic of Poland, Karol Nawrocki.

During the ceremony, the title of "Personality of Gdańsk University of Technology" will be awarded. A key part of the event will be the formal admission of first-year students into the university community. Representatives from each of the university’s eight faculties will take part in the matriculation ceremony, during which they will take an official oath in the presence of the university authorities and invited guests.
The programme will also include a speech by Liwia Karwat, Chair of the Student Self-Government of Gdańsk University of Technology, representing the student community.

During the inauguration, the Gdańsk Tech Talent Scholarships will also be awarded. These scholarships are granted to young, talented individuals with a passion for science, who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance and achievements beyond traditional competitions and Olympiads. Six laureates, arriving in Gdańsk from regions such as Mazovia and Podlasie, will receive these prestigious awards. The scholarship includes admission to any program of their choice at Gdańsk University of Technology, a designated academic mentor, a monthly allowance of PLN 2,000 throughout the entire course of study, accommodation in a student dormitory, and the opportunity for an individualized study program.

The ceremony will also be an occasion to present an award to the student with the highest academic achievements in the previous academic year. Furthermore, the winner of the Romuald Szczęsny Award for the best thesis prepared at Gdańsk University of Technology will be honored.

Musical accompaniment for the inauguration will be prepared by the Academic Choir of Gdańsk University of Technology, conducted by Professor Mariusz Mróz.

Inaugural Lecture

The event will conclude with an inaugural lecture entitled "The Development of Materials in Personalized Implantology," delivered by Professor Jozef Živčák from the Technical University of Košice in Slovakia.

Professor Živčák specializes in biomedical engineering. He is the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Košice and works in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Measurement. He holds honorary doctorates from Uzhhorod National University in Ukraine and Bialystok University of Technology. He is also an honorary professor at Óbuda University in Budapest, a recipient of the Master of Public Health Award from Apsley Business School in London, and a member of the Slovak Scientific Society. Additionally, he is one of the signatories of the founding declaration of biomedical engineering in Czechoslovakia.

His lecture will focus on modern additive manufacturing technologies in implantology, with particular emphasis on breakthrough solutions developed at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Technical University of Košice. Topics will include biocompatible materials and the results of research into their biological compatibility. The role of the biomedical engineer as a member of an interdisciplinary surgical team will also be discussed, along with clinical analyses of patients with implants, both pre- and post-operation.

Activities for Students

As every year, Gdańsk University of Technology has prepared a number of activities to help students enjoy their return to campus or begin their first year in a stress-free way.

Off-Campus Ceremonies

On the same day, at 9:15 a.m., a traditional wreath-laying ceremony will be held at the Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers. At 7:00 p.m., a Holy Mass will be celebrated at the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Gdańsk-Wrzeszcz, offered in the intention of the new academic year for the entire academic community of the Tri-City area.

Joint Opening of the Academic Year for Pomeranian Universities

On Saturday, October 4th, at 11:00 a.m., the academic community from several Pomeranian universities, along with representatives of local government, will gather at Targ Węglowy in Gdańsk to participate in a joint academic procession along Długa Street, held for the third time. The event is organized by the Fahrenheit Universities and everyone is invited to join.
