CI TASK in the national navigation, timing and communications security system

TASK
GPS jamming, spoofing and cyberattacks on navigation systems are no longer just scenarios from films – today, they are a real threat to the Baltic Sea and Poland’s territory. Reliable positioning and time synchronisation are now crucial not only for transport and energy production, but also for national security. This is why the Polish PNT Shield is being created. It is one of the key projects strengthening Poland's digital and technological sovereignty, in which the Centre of Informatics Tricity Academic Supercomputer and networK of the Gdańsk University of Technology is actively involved.

The Polish PNT (Positioning, Navigation, Timing) Shield is based on the integration of systems from the Ministry of National Defence (Department of Infrastructure at MND, General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces-P5), the Ministry of Digital Affairs (National Institute of Telecommunications-National Research Institute) and the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology (Head Office of Geodesy and Cartography/Surveyor General of Poland, Polish Space Agency) around a common ICT solution. The PNT system is based on a cloud computing data processing ecosystem, including Polish supercomputers.

The Centre of Informatics Tricity Academic Supercomputer and networK at the Gdańsk University of Technology (CI TASK) is actively involved in this project, together with other government and academic centres.

The project involves the development of a systemic solution to strengthen the resilience of critical infrastructure to cyber threats, and the Polish PNT Shield will receive native METEO enhancement. The project is being implemented by the National Institute of Telecommunications together with its partners and is part of the broader InfraShield360 programme, which comprises three strategic pillars:

  • Secure timing and navigation (PNT) – building resilience in positioning and time synchronisation.
  • Secure communications – developing solutions that guarantee independent communication.
  • Secure digital infrastructure – protecting key elements of national digital resources.

The Polish PNT Shield is a comprehensive system that increases the state's situational awareness, provides alternative methods of positioning and time synchronisation, and improves the process of responding to threats. As a result, the project strengthens the resilience of the National Cybersecurity System, particularly in its physical aspect.

The project is being developed with a view to utilising Big Data, artificial intelligence and quantum technologies. The ministries’ aim is not only to protect Poland, but also to develop a solution that could become the standard for the EU and NATO, raising the level of security for the entire region.
