Gdańsk Tech has signed a consortium agreement with RADMOR (part of the WB GROUP) concerning the construction of the “PIRANIA” inspection vehicle. The new system, based on Polish technical expertise, is designed to monitor underwater critical infrastructure, including pipelines and telecommunications cables. The project is being carried out at the initiative of PG Biznes Hub, and the prototype development will be led by experts from the Deepwater Technologies Laboratory.

The ceremonial signing of the agreement took place on January 23rd in the Senate Hall of Gdańsk Tech. The agreement stipulates that a vehicle prototype will be created at the university, integrating the unique knowledge of Gdańsk Tech engineers with components supplied by RADMOR, a leading manufacturer of communication systems and electronics for the defense sector.

Science in the Service of Security

The technical implementation of the project will be handled by the team from the Deepwater Technology Laboratory (LTG) at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology. The work on the prototype's design will be led by Tomasz Sauer, an expert in underwater technologies. It is in this laboratory, based on the industrial components provided by the partner, that the concept of "PIRANIA" will materialize.

A key role in establishing the consortium was played by the PG Business Hub. This unit, responsible for intensifying cooperation between the university, society, and the business environment, initiated the project by identifying potential and actively participating in defining the terms of collaboration between engineers from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology and the technological giant from Gdynia.

– As a research university, we have set ourselves the goal of being not only a center of science and education but also an active technological hub that genuinely supports the Polish economy and defense. The "PIRANIA" project is an excellent example of this strategy – says Prof. Krzysztof Wilde, Rector of Gdańsk Tech. – We have unique competencies in marine engineering. After the successes of our combat systems, the time has come for technologies protecting what is invisible yet crucial to the functioning of the state: the critical infrastructure of the Baltic Sea. By combining Gdańsk Tech’s scientific potential with the manufacturing capabilities of GRUPA WB, we are creating a next-generation technological shield.

This initiative represents another step in strengthening relations between the Gdańsk university and the defense industry, responding to rapidly evolving threats.

– This is another agreement between GRUPA WB and Gdańsk Tech, extending existing cooperation into new areas related to national security and the protection of critical infrastructure. This is particularly important at a time when our borders and key facilities are exposed to hybrid attacks and constant pressure – said Bartłomiej Zając, President of RADMOR. – I am confident that the modern technologies and technical solutions developed jointly will increase the security of the state. At the same time, the agreement is an excellent example of building synergy between a leading industry and representatives of science, which will result in systems that help protect critical underwater installations vital to the state's operation.

Gdańsk Tech as a Leader in Underwater Technologies

The choice of Gdańsk Tech and LTG is not accidental. The university has a rich portfolio of maritime solutions implemented. It is worth noting that it was here that the Mine Countermeasure System "Głuptak" was developed, which equips the modern Kormoran II-class minehunters. In September 2025, the university also presented the "Tukan" system, used for identifying hazardous objects.

"PIRANIA" will be a natural extension of these competencies, shifting the focus from mine neutralization to continuous monitoring and preventive protection of underwater pipelines and fiber optics.
