Gdańsk Tech received four highest A+ categories, nine A categories, and two B+ categories in the scientific activity evaluation for the years 2022–2025. Four A+ categories represent the second-best result among Polish technical universities, while nine A categories are the best result. In total, 13 out of the university's 15 disciplines ranked in the two highest categories.

The evaluation of scientific activity is a nationwide assessment of research conducted by universities and institutes. The Ministry does not evaluate the university as a whole, but each discipline represented by it separately.

The highest category A+ was awarded to four disciplines:

  • architecture and urban planning,
  • automation, electronics, electrical engineering and space technologies,
  • environmental engineering, mining and energy,
  • chemical sciences.

A+ is the highest possible category, granted to disciplines distinguished by the quality of research compared to other units conducting scientific activity in the same field.

– The four highest A+ categories are a source of great satisfaction, but the strength of Gdańsk Tech is best demonstrated by the overall result. As many as 13 out of 15 evaluated disciplines were placed in the two highest categories. This confirms the very high and balanced level of research conducted throughout the entire university – says Prof. Krzysztof Wilde, Rector of Gdańsk Tech. – This is the result of the consistent work of our researchers, PhD students, laboratory staff, and teams supporting research activities. The outcome is also a clear signal to enterprises, public institutions, and research centers both domestically and internationally that Gdańsk Tech is a reliable partner in carrying out ambitious research and implementation projects. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this success – adds the Rector.

The results also confirm the development direction of Gdańsk Tech as one of the ten universities implementing the "Excellence Initiative – Research University" program. Within the framework of IDUB, Gdańsk Tech supports research teams, the development of young researchers, international cooperation, and interdisciplinary research projects.

All disciplines with at least a B+ category

The A category was awarded to:

  • biotechnology,
  • economics and finance,
  • technical computer science and telecommunications,
  • biomedical engineering,
  • chemical engineering,
  • civil engineering, geodesy and transport,
  • materials engineering,
  • mathematics,
  • management and quality sciences.

The B+ category was awarded to mechanical engineering and physical sciences. Thus, all 15 disciplines evaluated at Gdańsk Tech received at least a B+ category, and 13 of them were placed in the two highest categories.

At a similar stage of the previous evaluation, Gdańsk Tech had three A+ categories, eight A categories, and three B+ categories. Currently, the number of disciplines with an A or A+ category has increased from 11 to 13. Biotechnology, which received an A category, also joined the group of evaluated disciplines.

Why are these results important?

Scientific categories have significance beyond prestige. They affect the development opportunities of individual disciplines, the education of doctoral students, awarding academic degrees, and obtaining funding for further research.

The evaluation takes into account, among others, scientific achievements of staff, ongoing projects and secured funding, as well as the impact of conducted research on the economy and society.

The procedure is not yet complete

The announced results do not close the entire procedure. After receiving the minister's decision, universities will be able to request a reconsideration of individual disciplines.

In the previous evaluation, Gdańsk Tech successfully made use of this possibility. After reconsideration of submitted requests, the number of disciplines with the highest A+ category increased from three to six. The final result of the current evaluation will be known after the completion of the whole process.
