PhD Eng. Karolina Górnicka from Gdańsk Tech participated in research on a new family of materials whose magnetic and electronic properties can be controlled by appropriate selection of chemical composition. The results of the international team of scientists were published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

The article Synergistic Doping and Stabilization of Magnetically Tunable LnTi₃(Sb,Sn)₄ (Ln: Ce–Gd) Kagome Metals was published on July 23, 2026, in the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS), one of the most prestigious scientific journals in the fields of chemistry and materials science. Dr. Eng. Karolina Górnicka is one of the co-authors of the publication and is affiliated with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Gdańsk Tech.

The research was conducted by an interdisciplinary team of scientists associated with, among others, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Central Florida. It concerned the synthesis and characterization of new compounds belonging to the kagome metals group. The scientists demonstrated that the appropriate selection of chemical composition allows for the stabilization of new structures while simultaneously controlling their magnetic and electronic properties.

– The publication is an excellent example of how important collaboration between specialists from different fields is in contemporary science. In the project, we combined the synthesis of new materials and their detailed characterization with advanced theoretical calculations and experiments that allow direct study of the electronic structure of materials. Only by combining all these methods was it possible to understand why the new compounds are stable and how their properties can be controlled – explains Dr. Eng. Karolina Górnicka.

New Material Design Strategy

The approach used by the team is called synergistic doping. It can become a strategy enabling the production of new materials with desirable and controllable physical properties.

– We have demonstrated that the appropriate selection of chemical composition allows not only the synthesis of new chemical compounds but also the controlled modification of their magnetic and electronic properties. This opens a new path for designing materials with desired characteristics that may find applications in the future, among others, in electronics, spintronics, and quantum technologies. Our results also show that synergistic doping can become a universal strategy for discovering new materials with unique physical properties – adds the researcher.

Dr. Eng. Karolina Górnicka is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Applied Physics and Mathematics at Gdańsk Tech. She is also scientifically affiliated with Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the United States, one of the largest research laboratories of the U.S. Department of Energy.
