On September 24, 2026, the Scientific Club of Chemistry Students at Gdańsk Tech solemnly celebrated the centenary of its activity. The historic event brought together the university and faculty authorities, academic staff, students, doctoral candidates, and alumni, as well as numerous representatives from industry, business, and external partners with whom the Club daily implements innovative projects.
During the official part of the meeting, the current President of the Science Club, Alan Kreft, summarized the ongoing activities of the students, placing particular emphasis on synergy with the socio-economic environment and outlining ambitious plans for the upcoming century. He presented the project achievements that have been realized for years in collaboration with external partners. Among the most important initiatives, he highlighted, among others, the cooperation with the Coastal Landscape Park ongoing for over twenty years (including regular quarterly monitoring of surface water quality) and advanced cyclic studies of the waters of the Gulf of Gdańsk. Future research plans were also outlined, with particular focus on a new project concerning the sorption of liquid and gaseous pollutants. The organization also remains committed to its educational and popularization mission – for over 12 years, the Science Club has been organizing the highly regarded workshops for high school students "Chemistry Without Borders" and preparing spectacular chemistry shows that consistently fascinate audiences and promote the sciences in the region.
The lecture delivered by Łukasz Katlewicz recalled the roots of the organization. The beginnings of the Science Club date back to May 22, 1925, when Polish students, under extremely unfavorable conditions and in the face of repression at the then-German university, established their own organization. Their determination laid a solid foundation for the later development of the Faculty of Chemistry.
The anniversary was also an opportunity to express gratitude to mentors. For many years of commitment and introducing students to the world of science and cooperation with industry, former supervisors of the Science Club were honoured: Prof. PhD DSc Eng. Jan Hupka, PhD DSc Eng. Marek Lieder, Prof. Gdańsk Tech, and Mr. Henryk Gorzeń.
The ceremony, graced by the performance of former Science Club president Emilia Osowska, concluded with a panel discussion "100 Years of Chemistry Among Us." The debate on the past and challenges of the student scientific movement featured: Vice-Rector for Student Experience Dr Barbara Wikieł, Associate Professor; Vice-Dean for Student Affairs of the Faculty of Chemistry Dr Sebastian Demkowicz, DSc, Eng., Associate Professor; Prof. Jan Hupka, long-standing supervisor of NKCh SPG; and Filip Zinkowski, Vice-President of NKCh SPG. The celebrations confirmed that the Scientific Chemistry Club is not only history but above all a vibrant organization, constituting an important link in the cooperation between Gdańsk Tech and the external world.
