The Minister of Sport and Tourism, Jakub Rutnicki, announced on Wednesday during a press conference at the Academic Sports Center of Gdańsk Tech about the allocation of PLN 1.75 million in funding for the modernization of the football field. The funds come from the Program for the Development of Academic Sports Infrastructure. Representatives of Gdańsk Tech, city authorities, and parliament discussed with the minister the possibilities of financing the planned construction of a sports and entertainment hall for 2,000 spectators. The university is able to build such a facility by 2029.

– If we think about a dual career path, so that our students can also develop their sporting passions, concrete actions are needed. […] I am convinced that the infrastructure in Gdańsk, the Tri-City area, and throughout Pomerania needs support – said Jakub Rutnicki, Minister of Sport and Tourism, granting Gdańsk Tech funding for the modernization of the football pitch. – Such significant undertakings [like the construction of the sports and entertainment hall – ed.] are part of the strategic investment program. We will announce the next call, and I am convinced that if such an application is submitted, it certainly has a high chance of being funded.

Prof. Krzysztof Wilde, Rector of Gdańsk Tech, reminded that Gdańsk Tech won the Academic Polish Championships six times in a row and the university systematically and consistently develops sports infrastructure, encouraging students to engage in sports.

– We are very eager to involve young people in sports, not only our students but also youth and children, but to do this effectively we need appropriate infrastructure – said Prof. Krzysztof Wilde, Rector of Gdańsk Tech. – In the Tri-City, there is a lack of a hall for two thousand people, that is, a moderately sized one where organizing various sports events would be much easier. Such a hall is planned on the premises of the Gdańsk Tech Academic Sports Center. We are ready, we have the entire functional and utility program, assumptions. If we can refine the financial engineering, by 2029 we will be able to hand over the hall for use.

The need to build new sports facilities, such as the sports and entertainment hall, was also mentioned by Piotr Borawski, Deputy Mayor of Gdańsk, and MP Agnieszka Pomaska.

– I am very pleased that Gdańsk universities strongly prioritize sports – said Piotr Borawski. – Of course, we are now waiting for further large projects within the strategic investment program.

– We are striving to organize the Olympic Games in Poland. I have no doubt that Gdańsk and Pomerania will play a very important role. We must think prospectively about sports investments – said Agnieszka Pomaska.

The hall will serve students, residents, and sports clubs

The new sports and entertainment hall is intended to serve Gdańsk Tech students, residents of Gdańsk, and local sports clubs, which currently struggle with the lack of facilities with adequate capacity. The facility is planned on an undeveloped area of the Gdańsk Tech Academic Sports Center. The hall will accommodate over 2,000 spectators, and thanks to extensive amenities—including a gym, fitness room, sauna, physiotherapy offices, and conference rooms—it will become not only a venue for sports events but also a training base for local indoor sports teams. In July 2025, Gdańsk Tech and the City of Gdańsk signed a letter of intent regarding this matter. The winning entries of the architectural and urban planning concept competition were also presented. The pitch will receive a new surface and lighting

For the development of academic sports infrastructure in Gdańsk, under the Program for the Development of Academic Sports Infrastructure – 2025 edition, the ministry allocated over PLN 4 million in total. Apart from Gdańsk Tech, the Academy of Physical Education and Sport received PLN 2.357 million for the construction of a pitch. The decision was accepted from the minister’s hands by the AWFiS Chancellor, Dr. Krzysztof Nowak, who announced that the new pitch will be opened as early as October.

The event was also attended by, among others, Mariusz Miler, Chancellor of Gdańsk Tech, the management of the Gdańsk Tech Academic Sports Center, Paweł Wojnowski, Plenipotentiary of the Pomeranian Voivode for Sports, Łukasz Bejm, Chairman of the Sports, Recreation and Tourism Committee in the Gdańsk City Council, Adam Korol, Director of the Gdańsk Mayor’s Office for Sports and former Olympic champion, as well as Prof. Janusz Czerwiński, former honorary rector of AWFiS in Gdańsk and former representative of Poland and national handball team coach.

As part of the football pitch modernization, the surface and lighting will be replaced with environmentally friendly materials. The nets, cables, and accessories of the ball catchers will be repaired and replaced, as will the fence surrounding the pitch. Additionally, three scoreboards will be installed—one main in the center of the pitch and two smaller ones on the sides—as well as sound system equipment, which was previously missing. Six new goals will also be purchased—for the main pitch and two smaller ones. To fully utilize the modern pitch, the project also plans to purchase a small tractor with an attachment for maintaining the artificial surface. This will help regularly maintain the new “turf” and extend the facility's lifespan.

According to the ministry, the aim of the Program for the Development of Academic Sports Infrastructure is to expand and improve the condition of facilities serving Polish academic sports, owned by universities and used by them for physical education classes as well as training and sports athlete development. Investments concern construction, reconstruction, renovation, and modernization of, among others, sports halls, indoor swimming pools, athletics stadiums, and pitches.
