The inauguration of the academic year for PhD students took place during PhD Open – an event dedicated to the most important aspects related to an academic career and the opportunities offered by joining doctoral schools at Gdańsk Tech.
The fourth edition of PhD Open took place on Friday, October 9, in the Gdańsk Tech Auditorium. The event began with a speech by the Rector of Gdańsk Tech, Prof. Krzysztof Wilde.
– I encourage you to make the most of your time studying at Gdańsk Tech. Not only to conduct research but also for your personal development and building your future academic career. However, do not forget to maintain what is known as work-life balance, as personal life is equally important – says Prof. Krzysztof Wilde, Rector of Gdańsk Tech. – Remember that science is primarily teamwork, which is why close and regular cooperation with your supervisor is so important. Great responsibility rests on academic supervisors to support PhD students both in conducting research and successfully completing their doctoral studies.
The event was also attended by prof. Dariusz Mikielewicz, Vice-Rector for Research, prof. Robert Jankowski, Director of the Doctoral School, prof. Ewa Klugmann-Radziemska, Director of the Implementation Doctoral School, deans and vice-deans of the faculties of Gdańsk Tech, as well as MEng Aleksandra Ławniczak, Chair of the Doctoral Students’ Council at Gdańsk Tech, academic teachers, supervisors, doctoral candidates, and students interested in pursuing doctoral studies.
Next, the solemn matriculation of the new doctoral candidates took place, conducted by Prof. Dariusz Mikielewicz, Vice-Rector for Research, officially welcoming them to the academic community of Gdańsk Tech.
After the solemn matriculation of the doctoral candidates, those gathered in the Gdańsk Tech Aula listened to the inaugural lecture titled “The War on Drugs in Latin America: Organised Crime, State Resaliance, and Lessons for Poland,” delivered by professor Piotr Chomczyński from the University of Łódź. He is a renowned criminologist and sociologist specializing in Latin American organized crime and drug trafficking.
The latter part of the event was divided into three thematic blocks. The “PhD Success Toolkit” was aimed at individuals entering the doctoral community of the university. This block presented information about the applicable education program and the requirements imposed on PhD students. Additionally, attendees learned how to resolve problems when they arise and were informed about the activities of the Doctoral Student Government supporting the doctoral community – including self-government programs, initiatives, and offered assistance.
In the next block, titled “The Road to Impact,” participants gained knowledge on how to approach a doctoral dissertation, how to publish their results and what aspects to pay attention to, as well as the importance of international collaboration in a researcher’s career.
The final block presented – “Research in Motion” – was the essence of the most important information about possible forms of obtaining research funding through national and international competitions, as well as the mobility programs available to PhD students. One of the lectures covered programs dedicated to doctoral candidates under the ministerial project “Excellence Initiative – Research University.”
