At the beginning of June, two major projects involving researchers from Gdańsk Tech were launched, implemented under the Horizon 2020 program. Thanks to the established cooperation, the university will have a real impact on the development of Internet of Things technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and 5G networks. It will also provide innovative solutions for companies such as Airbus, Ericsson, Ford, and Philips.

The entry of Gdańsk Tech into the international circle of partners and the opportunity to have a real impact on the development of Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and new reconfigurable antennas for future 5G systems is a great success. It also crowns many years of efforts by a group of scientists working at the Department of Microwave Engineering and Antenna Systems of the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics at Gdańsk Tech, as well as the result of their scientific research and R&D work.

In these projects, Gdańsk Tech will provide solutions for, among others, Airbus, Ericsson, Ford, Philips Healthcare, AVL, NXP, and Liebherr. The total budget of Gdańsk Tech in both projects amounts to PLN 11.8 million.

44 million euros to combat cyberattacks

The InSecTT - Intelligent Secure Trustable Things project is an initiative with a budget of over 44 million euros, comprising the most important companies and research institutions from across Europe (a total of 52 partners from 11 EU countries and Turkey), developing secure IoT systems supported by artificial intelligence solutions. The use of intelligent data processing mechanisms in IoT devices will enable the creation of solutions more resistant to cyberattacks and disruptions, which can be used in Industry 4.0 areas.

Gdańsk Tech plays a significant role in the project as the leader of one of the key implementation areas, an important supplier of radio and antenna components for wireless embedded systems enhanced with artificial intelligence, as well as a driver of activities aimed at involving students in the project collaboration.

– An important aspect of the project will also be the possibility of practically implementing our developed localization systems for IoT and technologies for secure and reliable wireless communication. They can improve both the efficiency of tasks carried out by large companies and institutions, as well as enhance the safety of their operations – says the project leader representing Gdańsk Tech, Prof. Łukasz Kulas from the Department of Microwave Engineering and Antenna Systems, Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics, and also the rector’s plenipotentiary at the recently established Gdańsk Tech Digital Technologies Centre (one of the four new research centres created at Gdańsk Tech after receiving the research university status in October 2019).

– We have managed to include Pomerania as one of the implementation sites in the project, and we are currently planning pilot installations in local ports and hospitals, which particularly pleases us – adds Prof. Kulas.

Modern 5G technologies and environmental care

The BEYOND5 project: Building the fully European supplY chain on RFSOI, enabling New RF Domains for Sensing, Communication, 5G and beyond is a pioneering technological project whose consortium consists of the most important European entities developing 5G systems based on FDSOI integrated circuit manufacturing technologies.

The project, with a budget of over 97 million euros, involves 36 partners from EU countries, Turkey, Israel, and Switzerland. The new technologies developed in the project will contribute to the application of high-scale integration of integrated circuits, allowing for reduced energy consumption, higher reliability, and better price competitiveness, enabling in the future the mass production of reliable components for 5G in EU countries, while maintaining low negative environmental impact in Europe.

– In the project, we will implement advanced antenna systems enabling dynamic adaptation of 5G wireless systems to the environmental conditions in which they operate, to ensure reliable communication with increased resistance to radio interference – says Prof. Krzysztof Nyka, the project leader on the Gdańsk Tech side.

Project partners are especially interested in the possibilities available at the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics concerning millimeter waves. Besides our scientific potential, the creation of the FutureLab laboratory concept by the Dean of the Faculty was an evident factor influencing the acquisition of this project, placing us among the European leading institutions in the development of 5G technologies using communication in frequency bands above 20 GHz.
