A team of scientists: M.Sc. Arch. Justyna Wesołowska from the Faculty of Architecture, M.Sc. Michał Boczoń from the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics, under the supervision of PhD Eng. Arch. Izabela Burda, received a prestigious distinction in the international Arturbain.fr 2023/24 competition. This year’s edition of the contest, organized for 31 years by the French institution “L'Art Urbain dans les Territoires,” focused on ecological transformation.

The competition winners, developing a project titled "L'impact du passé" ("The Impact of the Past"), focused their attention on the Stogi district of Gdańsk. In their work, they proposed transforming its central part into a vibrant space that fosters social integration. The solutions presented, deeply rooted in the area's history and demonstrating possibilities for transforming a degraded, partially abandoned part of the city, were appreciated by the competition jury. The project received the 'MENTION QUALITÉ ARCHITECTURALE' distinction for high architectural quality. According to the authors, the proposed changes would harmoniously connect the past with the future, improving the quality of life for residents while addressing environmental protection aspects.

The award ceremony took place on June 24 at the Ministère de la Transition Ecologique headquarters, in the Arche de la Défense in Paris. The laureates had the opportunity to present their projects before an international audience.

Among the 12 projects qualified for the final round of the competition, four projects were developed by teams from Gdańsk Tech – three led by PhD Eng. Arch. Izabela Burda and one supervised by DSc PhD Eng. Arch. Dorota Wojtowicz – Jankowska. In addition to the awarded project "L'impact du passé" by Justyna Wesołowska and Michał Boczoń, the finalists also included:

  • The project „Les rues sont faites pour marcher" developed by the team consisting of Sara Kłosowska, Kinga Makowska, Aleksandra Bonk, led by PhD Eng. Arch. Izabela Burda;

– Teams from Gdańsk Tech have been participating in this prestigious international competition since 2006 thanks to the initiative of architect Janusz Gujski. His commitment and passion have greatly contributed to the success of our teams on the international stage, says PhD Izabela Burda. – Through participation in this competition, students have the opportunity to develop their skills, establish contacts with peers from other countries, and gain valuable experience. This distinction not only highlights the high standards of Gdańsk Tech but also motivates further work on innovative projects that respond to contemporary architectural and urban challenges.
