At Gdańsk Tech about a project that may support the nutrition of premature infants
How can science, medicine, and technology jointly respond to the needs of the youngest patients? This will be the topic of the seminar inaugurating the PreciousHMFstudy project, which will take place on April 23 at 10:00 AM in the Chemical Auditorium in the Chemia A building, room 100. The meeting will begin with a presentation of the main assumptions of the initiative, followed by short presentations from the project partners.

PreciousHMFstudy is a project dedicated to developing technology that enables personalized fortification of human milk for preterm infants directly in hospital settings. Its goal is to create a solution that helps better tailor nutrition to the needs of newborns, especially those with very low birth weight. This idea will serve as the starting point for the seminar.
A project that combines several fields
Human milk is the best food for preterm infants, but it does not always fully meet their individual nutritional needs. The PreciousHMFstudy project involves combining the preparation of human milk fortification supplements with rapid analysis of its composition, making it possible to provide safer and more precise nutrition for the youngest patients.
This is an initiative where scientific research, technological solutions, and clinical practice converge. It is this dimension of collaboration that is intended to be highlighted during the seminar inaugurating the project. The organizers aim to demonstrate how the joint efforts of partners can translate into concrete solutions important from the perspective of preterm infant care.
Partners will discuss their roles
The seminar program includes brief presentations by the project partners. The Swiss company Babylat AG will present work on a device for human milk fortification. The Polish company PREMS LLC will talk about the development of a milk composition analyzer. The Gdańsk Tech team will showcase activities related to process validation and safety and quality assessment, while the Medical University of Gdańsk will provide insights into the clinical dimension of the endeavor.
The seminar is intended not only to inaugurate the project but also to serve as an opportunity to show how diverse competencies, from engineering and analytics to medicine, can jointly create solutions that address the real needs of patients and medical staff.
Project conducted at Gdańsk Tech
The PreciousHMFstudy project is being conducted at Gdańsk Tech in the Department of Chemistry, Technology and Food Biotechnology. It is led by PhD hab. Eng. Edyta Malinowska-Pańczyk, DSc. The project will continue until the end of January 2029 and is funded under the Swiss-Polish Cooperation Programme / NCBR. The total value of the funding exceeds PLN 3.6 million, with over PLN 1 million allocated to Gdańsk Tech.
