The award was presented during the 160th AES Convention in Copenhagen on May 28, 2026. The Board of Governors Award is given to AES members for outstanding contributions to the Society.

Prof. Bożena Kostek was honored with this distinction in recognition of co-chairing the 158th AES Convention, which took place in Warsaw in May 2025. The award was granted by the decision of the AES Board of Governors and signed by Brecht de Man, AES President, and Valerie Tyler, AES Secretary.

Prof. Bożena Kostek

A full member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, employed as a professor at Gdańsk Tech at the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics, she serves as the head of the Laboratory of Speech Acoustics. Prof. Kostek was awarded the title of Fellow by the Audio Engineering Society (2010) and the Acoustical Society of America (2020).

Research conducted by Prof. Kostek in the interdisciplinary field of sound engineering, situated at the intersection of acoustics, cognitive sciences, and computer science, has resulted in numerous scientific achievements including numerous publications (over 600) and implementations.

In Prof. Kostek’s research output, two streams related to applications of sound engineering stand out. Two foreign monographs (“Soft Computing in Acoustics,” “Perception-based Data Processing in Acoustics”) refer to the ongoing technological breakthrough in music informatics, particularly in intelligent processing, searching, and recommendation of music. The second stream is related to scientific and applied research in broadly understood medical informatics, focusing primarily on human-computer communication interfaces. The outcome of these works was a co-authored monograph “Computer Technology in Audiology, Phoniatrics, and Speech Therapy,” as well as numerous implementations in these fields, awarded at world and European invention exhibitions, developed in a team with the Multimedia Systems Department of Gdańsk Tech and Prof. Kostek’s doctoral students.

She is the author and co-author of 40 engineering implementations (21 patent applications and patents, including 8 European patents), among them 20 implemented multimedia applications in the field of electronic correction of speech disorders, hearing aid fitting, audiometry and computer perimetry. She is also the author of a computer system for controlling pipe organs.
