The ceremonial session of the Senate of Gdańsk Tech will inaugurate the 2026/2027 academic year on October 2nd. A special highlight of the event will be the awarding of the title of doctor honoris causa to Prof. Gregory A. Worrell from the Mayo Clinic, one of the most prestigious medical and research centers in the world. In the first days of October, the campus will also be filled with students, who will enjoy a two-day Hyde Park – a space for meetings, integration, music, and good fun.

The inauguration of the 2026/2027 academic year will take place on October 2nd at 11:15 AM in the Aula of the Main Building of Gdańsk Tech.

During the ceremonial session of the Senate of Gdańsk Tech, Prof. Krzysztof Wilde, Rector of Gdańsk Tech, will officially open the new academic year. Traditionally, there will also be the matriculation of first-year students as well as the awarding of medals, decorations, and university prizes.

The Talent Scholarships of Gdańsk Tech will be awarded to this year's program laureates. The best student of Gdańsk Tech and the recipient of the Prof. Romuald Szczęsny Award will also be honored.

Prof. Gregory A. Worrell awarded Doctor Honoris Causa of Gdańsk Tech

One of the highlight points of this year’s ceremony will be the conferral of the honorary doctorate of Gdańsk Tech upon Prof. Gregory A. Worrell from Mayo Clinic. The laudation will be given by Prof. Bożena Kostek from the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics.

Prof. Gregory A. Worrell is a world-class scientist associated with Mayo Clinic, specializing in neurology, neuroscience, and biomedical engineering. His research focuses on epilepsy and the brain’s electrical activity, as well as sleep, memory, and consciousness. He combines clinical research with engineering and modern technologies used to monitor brain function and treat neurological diseases. Prof. Worrell has collaborated with Gdańsk Tech for many years. Thanks to joint research with Prof. Michał Kucewicz from the Department of Multimedia Systems at FETI under the leadership of Prof. Andrzej Czyżewski, technological solutions supporting Polish patients with epilepsy and potentially other neurodegenerative diseases have been developed.

Watch the video

After the award ceremony, Prof. Worrell will deliver the inaugural lecture titled “Engineering the brain: from seizures to sleep, memory, and consciousness.”

That day, a mobile studio from Radio Gdańsk will also appear on campus. The broadcaster will be airing an outdoor program from Gdańsk Tech starting in the morning.

Admission to the ceremony is free. It will also be possible to watch the online transmission on the university’s YouTube channel.

Students return to campus. Hydepark for a great start

The inauguration is the official start of the academic year, but the first days of October at Gdańsk Tech will also have a much less formal atmosphere.

On October 1st and 2nd, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, the green area of the campus and the surroundings of the Main Building will host the Gdańsk Tech Hydepark.

It was created primarily with first-year students in mind but will be open to everyone. This is a place where you can get to know the university from a less formal perspective, learn about the resources available at Gdańsk Tech, talk with people shaping the university, relax between classes, or simply have a good time.

The Hydepark area will be divided into several zones.

In the Welcome Zone, you can obtain practical information about scholarships, dormitories, international trips, development opportunities, and available forms of support. University units and student organizations will prepare their stands there.

In the Music / Art Zone, there will be live performances, and between them, the stage will be open to those who want to tell their story, share an idea, or start a discussion.

In the Creative Zone, you will be able to decorate a T-shirt or an item of clothing you bring along, and in the Chill Zone, you can relax on deck chairs and hammocks.

For those who prefer movement and fun, the Games and Activities Zone will be available, prepared by the Academic Sports Center of Gdańsk Tech. The program includes integrative physical activities and a lottery with small gifts and university gadgets.

Of course, the Gastronomy Zone will also be present – offering drinks, field kitchen meals, and ice cream.

First year at Gdańsk Tech? Don’t worry, all information is available

You really don’t have to know everything right away. That’s why it’s worth checking the First-Year Student Guide, where we have gathered the most important information regarding your first weeks at the university – from PG systems and student ID cards, through ECTS and exams, to scholarships, dormitories, and campus life.

W Strefie Welcome będzie można zdobyć praktyczne informacje o stypendiach, akademikach, wyjazdach zagranicznych, możliwościach rozwoju i dostępnych formach wsparcia. Swoje stanowiska przygotują jednostki uczelni i organizacje studenckie.
