The ceremonial session of the Senate of Gdańsk Tech will inaugurate the 2026/2027 academic year on October 2nd. A special highlight of the event will be the awarding of the title of doctor honoris causa to Prof. Gregory A. Worrell from the Mayo Clinic, one of the most prestigious medical and research centers in the world. In the first days of October, the campus will also be filled with students, who will enjoy a two-day Hyde Park – a space for meetings, integration, music, and good fun.

The inauguration of the academic year 2026/2027 will take place on October 2 at 11:15 AM in the Auditorium of the Main Building of Gdańsk Tech.

During the solemn session of the Senate of Gdańsk Tech, Prof. Krzysztof Wilde, Rector of Gdańsk Tech, will officially open the new academic year. Traditionally, there will also be the matriculation of first-year students and the awarding of medals, decorations, and university prizes.

The Gdańsk Tech Talent Scholarships will be awarded to this year's program laureates. The best Gdańsk Tech student and the laureate of the Prof. Romuald Szczęsny Prize will also be recognized.

Prof. Gregory A. Worrell awarded honorary doctorate of Gdańsk Tech

One of the most important points of this year’s ceremony will be the conferral of the honorary doctorate of Gdańsk Tech to Prof. Gregory A. Worrell from Mayo Clinic. The laudation will be presented by Prof. Bożena Kostek from the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics.

Prof. Gregory A. Worrell is a world-class scientist affiliated with Mayo Clinic, specializing in neurology, neuroscience, and biomedical engineering. His research covers epilepsy, brain electrical activity, as well as sleep, memory, and consciousness. He combines clinical research with engineering and modern technologies used to monitor brain activity and treat neurological diseases. Prof. Worrell has been cooperating with Gdańsk Tech for many years. Thanks to joint research with Prof. Michał Kucewicz from the Department of Multimedia Systems at the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics, under the supervision of Prof. Andrzej Czyżewski, technological solutions have been developed to support Polish patients with epilepsy and potentially other neurodegenerative diseases.

Watch the video

After the honorary doctorate conferral ceremony, Prof. Worrell will deliver the inaugural lecture titled “Engineering the brain: from seizures to sleep, memory, and consciousness.”

On the same day, a mobile studio from Radio Gdańsk will also appear on campus. The radio station will broadcast an outdoor program from Gdańsk Tech starting in the morning.

Admission to the ceremony is free. There will also be an opportunity to watch the online broadcast on the university’s YouTube channel.

Students return to campus. Hydepark for a good start

The inauguration is the official beginning of the academic year, but the first days of October at Gdańsk Tech will also have a much less formal character.

On October 1 and 2, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Hydepark PG will appear on the green area of the campus and around the Main Building.

It was created primarily with first-year students in mind but will be open to everyone. It is a place where you can get to know the university in a more informal way, learn about the resources available at Gdańsk Tech, talk to the people who make up the university, relax between classes, or simply have a good time.

The Hydepark area will be divided into several zones.

In the Welcome Zone, practical information about scholarships, dormitories, study abroad opportunities, development possibilities, and available forms of support will be provided. University units and student organizations will set up their stands.

In the Music / Art Zone, there will be live performances, and between them, the stage will be open to those who want to share their story, present an idea, or start a discussion. The Chill Zone will offer relaxation on deckchairs.

For those who prefer movement and fun, there will be the Games and Activities Zone, prepared by the Gdańsk Tech Academic Sports Center. The program includes integrative physical activities and a lottery with small gifts and university gadgets.

Of course, the Gastronomy Zone will also be present – with beverages, field kitchen, and ice cream.

First year at Gdańsk Tech? Don’t worry, you can find out everything

At the beginning, you really don’t have to know everything. That’s why it’s worth checking out the Freshman’s Handbook, where we have gathered the most important information about the first weeks at the university – from Gdańsk Tech systems and student ID cards, through ECTS and exams, to scholarships, dormitories, and campus life.

W Strefie Welcome będzie można zdobyć praktyczne informacje o stypendiach, akademikach, wyjazdach zagranicznych, możliwościach rozwoju i dostępnych formach wsparcia. Swoje stanowiska przygotują jednostki uczelni i organizacje studenckie.
