BUP PhD Students Training 2025 – application deadline: 30 May 2025

We are pleased to inform you about an opportunity to participate in an international event organised by the Baltic University Programme (BUP), of which our university is a member.

BUP PhD Students Training 2025 will take place from 24 to 28 November 2025 in Uppsala, Sweden, under the theme: “Strengthening the Security and Resilience of the Baltic Sea Region – Environmental, Political, Social, and Economic Shocks and Crises”. The training will be preceded by online seminars designed to prepare participants for the on-site part of the programme. The entire training will be held in connection with the annual BUP Symposium.


Event goals


The training is addressed to PhD students representing various disciplines, who are interested in the topic of sustainable development and the challenges facing the Baltic Sea Region. The main aims include:

  • an opportunity to present your research project and receive personalised feedback from international experts,
  • development of academic and scientific competencies through participation in lectures, workshops, and thematic sessions,
  • establishing interuniversity collaboration and expanding international academic networks,
  • integrating young researchers from the Baltic Sea Region around common environmental and societal challenges.

Event programme
  1. Online stage (October/November 2025):
    • Preparatory online seminars. On-site stage in Uppsala (24–28 November 2025)
       
  2. On-site stage in Uppsala (24–28 November 2025):
    • 24 November (Monday): Registration, welcome, keynote presentation
    • 25 November (Tuesday): Presentations, individual supervision sessions
    • 26 November (Wednesday): Keynote presentation, parallel workshop sessions, BUP Symposium starts, keynote presentation
    • 27 November (Thursday): Parallel sessions, poster presentations
    • 28 November (Friday): Parallel sessions continue, panel discussion, end of the BUP Symposium

As part of the Wednesday workshops, participants will be able to choose one of the following specialised sessions:

  • Sharing and Reflecting on Sustainable Futures
    Dr Oleksandra Khalaim (Uppsala University), Liisi Pajula (University of Tartu), Prof. Tatjana Tambovceva (Riga Technical University)

  • Calculating the Carbon Footprint
    Dr Aleksandra Ziemińska-Stolarska (Lodz University of Technology)

  • Planetary Plate Puzzle: A Serious Game for Deliberating Sufficient Future Diets
    Dr Rachel Mazac (Stockholm Resilience Centre, Stockholm University)

  • The training is open to 30 PhD students from BUP member universities
  • Application deadline: 30 May 2025, 23:59 CEST
  • Event language: English
  • Participation is free of charge. Meals during your stay in Uppsala will be provided by the organisers.
  • Participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation costs. Erasmus+ funding may be available (please contact the International Relations Office for details)
