The Future of Science and Key Competencies – the 3rd Edition of PhD Open (10.10.2025)

On October 10, 2025, the Gdańsk University of Technology community will gather for the third edition of PhD Open! It is our annual celebration, full of insightful discussions, inspiration, and networking, combined with an official welcome for new doctoral candidates. 

This year's edition will focus on the future of science, as well as the competencies and challenges facing young researchers. The event's agenda combines a formal welcome for our new doctoral candidates with inspiring panel discussions and practical presentations. It will also be a unique opportunity for the entire doctoral community of Gdańsk University of Technology to integrate and exchange experiences between young researchers from various disciplines.

Important: The event is free and open to everyone. Online registration is not mandatory, but it is required to receive a welcome pack.

Key Program Highlights:
  • Formal Opening and Inaugural Lecture: The day will begin with the matriculation ceremony. This will be followed by an inaugural lecture delivered by dr hab. Dominik Antonowicz, prof. NCU, who will introduce us to the main theme of the event and talk about the challenges facing young researchers. 

  • Panel Discussion "The future of science: what skills will be crucial for scientists in 2040?": This is the centerpiece of the program – a debate with our experts, where we will collectively consider what skills will be crucial in the world of science in the coming decades. The panelists will include: 

  • Practical Knowledge and Support: The afternoon session will provide a dose of key information. We will begin with a presentation by dr inż. Mariya E. Ivanova on the topic of ethics and integrity in research. Next, the Director of the Doctoral School, prof. dr hab. inż. Robert Jankowski, will say a few words about the formal requirements and opportunities offered by the Doctoral School. Further on, we will learn more about the IDUB program offer and the forms of support provided by the International Relations Office and the Young Researchers Office. The session will conclude with a presentation by the Gdańsk Tech Doctoral Students' Self-Government, who will talk more about their activities. 

  • Time for Conversation and Building Relationships: Beyond the formal agenda, integration is key. During the first coffee break, you will be able to visit the information stands of the Young Researchers Office and the Welcome Office, where their representatives will explain how they support doctoral candidates on their academic journey. The evening social event at the "Kwadratowa" club will be an excellent opportunity to network informally and get to know fellow doctoral candidates from across our University.

  • 11:30 – Panel Discussion: "The future of science: what skills will be crucial for scientists in 2040?" 

  • 12:30 – Lecture: "Why Ethics Matters: A personal Perspective on Research Integrity" | Dr.-Ing. (chem.) Mariya E. Ivanova

  • 13:30 – Presentation: "Training Program – Doctoral School 101" | prof. dr hab. inż. Robert Jankowski, Director of the Doctoral School

  • 14:00 – Lunch 

  • 14:55 – Presentation: ”IDUB offer for PhD Students” | Dr. Eng. Monika Wieczerzak

  • 15:05 – Presentation: Support for doctoral candidates from the International Relations Office | Anna Modrzejewska, MA

  • 15:15 – Presentation:"Support that makes sense - what the Young Researchers Team and Office offer" | Dr. Eng. Agnieszka Lendzion

  • 15:25 – Presentation: “Welcome to Gdańsk Tech Doctoral Self-Government" | M.Sc. Eng. Aleksandra Ławniczak

  • 15:30 – End of the event 

  • 19:00 – Doctoral Community Networking Evening (AK "Kwadratowa")
