Duration of the programme: 4 years (8 semesters)
Medium of instruction: English
Programme description:
The programme is aimed at teaching doctoral students innovative and novel methods and technologies of designing, making, studying, and applying advanced materials. Materials engineering (ME) is an interdisciplinary field of science. Therefore at Gdańsk University of Technology it is based at four faculties: Faculty of Applied Physics and Mathematics, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunication and Informatics, and Faculty of Chemistry. Since the variety of materials and methods worked with is very wide, the courses of the programme cover a wide spectrum of topics as well. Both the scientific research and education undertaken in our university is focused at industrial applications and basic research. Knowledge of the relations concerning properties, structure, processing, and performance makes the researchers working in materials engineering the masters of the engineering universe.
Materials engineering is a wide field of science. Materials engineers create, test, and assess known and new materials for special industrial and manufacturing applications. The obligatory and facultative courses, highlighting various methods of manufacturing and testing of a wide range of materials, are offered during the program. The programme includes lectures, seminars and laboratory work focused on multiple issues of materials engineering being instructed by domestic and visiting professors. The students start from the courses during which they become familiar with materials technologies and experimental characterization techniques used in laboratories at Gdańsk Tech.
Materials engineering is the discipline where advanced engineering and cutting-edge science meet. The PhD students research how to design and manipulate the structure and properties of materials not only at macroscopic but also at a molecular and atomic level. With a solid base in chemistry, physics, and mathematics, they add to specific engineering knowledge in nanotechnology, electroceramics, biomaterials, conducting polymers, advanced semi- and superconductors, photovoltaics, non-destructive testing of materials and many more thrilling fields.
To engage in a comprehensive range of research, we look for students with diverse backgrounds and undergraduate training, including physicists, chemists, and engineers from other disciplines.
Career opportunities:
With a PhD degree in materials engineering, alumni can choose many paths of their career. Graduates work in academia, national laboratories, obtain industry jobs, work for the government and for non-profit organizations. Their choices often include foreign institutions, which is facilitated by wide collaboration between Gdańsk University of Technology and foreign institutions. Current established collaborations of the GUT staff include groups from United States, Korea, India, Norway, Great Britain and many more.
Expert positions appropriate for a graduate with a PhD degree in materials engineering comprise: consulting engineer; materials researcher; academic Professor; senior data analyst.
