Downy birch is a tree species reaching about 20 meters in height. Its branches usually grow upwards, and the trunk is covered with white, matte bark. Unlike the silver birch, the bark at the base of the trunk is smooth or only slightly fissured. The leaves grow up to 7 cm in length and have irregularly toothed margins. This species occurs in northern and central Europe, is common throughout Poland, and prefers moist and waterlogged habitats.
