Plane trees are impressive trees, distinguished by their wide-spreading crowns, characteristic mottled bark, and interesting fruits.

In Western Europe, the London plane (Platanus × acerifolia) is most commonly cultivated. It is valued for its resistance to air pollution and ease of shaping, which is why it is often planted along streets, boulevards, promenades, and in parks. The tree can reach considerable size—up to 30 meters in height—producing broad, majestic crowns. Plane trees also have a strong ability to regenerate; after pruning, they quickly produce new shoots and branches.
