We invite students and staff of Gdańsk University of Technology to join the next session of the intercultural competence development program “Open Up! Dare!”. This time, we will explore the fascinating clash between Eastern and Western values. The central part of the event will be a screening of “The Farewell”, which will serve as a starting point for a discussion on cultural differences and identity formation in today’s globalized world.

After the screening, participants are invited to join a discussion with a film expert.

About the event

The meeting combines a film screening with an expert lecture and a discussion (approx. 45–60 minutes). The main theme:

“Between Worlds: Value Conflict and Identity Crisis in the Face of Cultural Differences”

Topics we will explore include:

lack of cultural identity and the experience of being a “guest” in another culture,
cultural differences as barriers in communication,
whether there is room for intuition and cultural sensitivity in a world dominated by science and data.

About the film

When Billi, living in New York, learns that her beloved grandmother Nai Nai is seriously ill, she wants to visit her immediately. However, the family decides to keep the truth from Nai Nai and organizes a fake wedding as a pretext for a family reunion. This unusual situation reveals tensions between different values, traditions, and worldviews.
