ITiT - Artificial Intelligence and Human-Computer Interaction

Research in this field focuses on two aspects:

1) Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence, which encompasses research involving the design and application of machine learning algorithms for a variety of applications, involving information retrieval, data processing, data classification and creation of expert systems. Particular applications include language processing for the purpose of data extraction from text-based sources, smart methods of information extraction from still images and data streams (eg. extraction of pulse rate and pulse waveform from visible light, face recognition, reliable extraction of respiratory rate and respiration waveforms from thermal imaging, emotion recognition based on analysis of facial (visible/infrared) image sequences), application of machine learnign for medical and biomedical data processing and analysis, physical activity analysis, human security and safety.

2) Human-Computer Interaction

Human-Computer Interaction, which studies the design and use of computer technology, in particular the communication interfaces, in order to discover new and improved methods of conveying data and actions between man and machine.  The main themes of research include affective computing, including automatic emotion recognition from physiological signals, video, and sound, based on machine learning approach. Moreover, the application of those methods to monitor human emotions in affect-aware systems, robotics and usability tests is also studied.  Another field of research are the methods of development and evaluation of assistive and educational technologies for people with disabilities (eg. brain-computer interfaces), as well as the rules of universal design to make applications and systems more accessible for all.

Research in this field is carried out in cooperation with medical institutions as well as companies producing equipment for data collection and processing, as well as human-computer interaction intefaces.
