About the film
The story of an impossible friendship, about how two very different people influence each other. Former nightclub bouncer Tony Lip is hired as the driver for renowned New York musician Don Shirley, and together they head south in the United States. In 1962, Jim Crow laws were in effect in the USA, and blacks and whites were forced to use separate schools, public restrooms, park benches, trains, and restaurant seats. The "Green Book" served as a guide to authorized places for African Americans. Neither of the two protagonists— the elegant and educated musician, nor the simple Italian-American New Yorker from the Bronx— had previously encountered racial segregation on such a large scale.
