Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are one of the forms of open educational resources. Content and materials are provided by leading universities that provide courses on special platforms or create their own solutions. The pioneer in this type of teaching is the Massachussets Institute of Technology (MIT), which in 2001 launched the MIT Open Course Ware platform. Currently, universities such as Cambridge University, Harvard University, Stanford University and the Technical University of Delft make all their courses available via dedicated websites, and participants receive certificates confirming the acquired skills.
There are also universities that teach only remotely, with the possibility of obtaining a full higher education. These include, for example, The Open University in Great Britain and UNED in Spain.
According to the adopted principle, MOOCs should be characterized by:
- M = mass, which means that they should be available and without loss of quality, regardless of the number of people participating in them.
- O = openness, i.e. allowing access to everyone, possibly without fees or further limits.
- O = online availability, i.e. take place remotely, regardless of the time and availability of the course author.
- C = have the form of a course that involves the use of films, audio recordings and interactive games as well as the text, and also enables group work between participants on the forum and passing the material through tests or projects.
