Participation in the course allows students to gain valuable knowledge in the field of IDE in Science, Technology and Society and earn ECTS credits.
For whom?
The offer is aimed at students (Bachelor, Master or doctoral degrees) of natural, planning and technical sciences, mathematics and computer science, as well as students who want to acquire competences in Science and Technology Studies (STS) with a focus on gender and diversity.
When? Online or onsite?
- June 27th to 28th 2024: Onboarding session (mandatory) - online
- July 2024: Introduction to Gender & Diversity in Science, Technology and Society (mandatory) - online
- July 29th to August 2nd 2024 - arrival on July 28th, departure on August 2nd (late) or August 3rd (mandatory) - onsite in Berlin
- August to September 2024: “Study Project on Gender & Diversity in STS” (optional) - online
Programme:
Module 1 – “Introduction to Gender & Diversity in STS” (online, 3 ECTS)
The introductory module provides participants with first insights into topics and approaches to gender and diversity in the STEM subjects (mathematics, computer science, natural and technical sciences). The participants learn about natural and technical science disciplines in a preparatory phase (videos & readings) through getting inputs by instructors, answering guiding questions related to learning materials and group work (online). Students completing Module 1 receive 3 ECTS.
Module 2 – “Summer School on Gender & Diversity in STS” (onsite, 3 ECTS)
In Module 2 during the onsite Summer School in Berlin, the introductory insights will be followed-up and deepened through inputs and workshops by experts on selected perspectives of interdisciplinary Science & Technology Studies with a focus on gender and diversity. Disciplines and subfields in STEM, such as engineering, computer science, robotics, physics and spatial planning, are included, as well as overarching problems such as digitalisation, sustainability or climate change. In addition, excursions to museums of nature and technology will be included in the onsite Summer School. At the end of the onsite week in Berlin, participants will have to developed ideas for possible study projects as part of a group activity and present an idea for a common study project. Students completing modules 1 + 2 receive 6 ECTS.

Module 3 is a continuation of Module 1 and 2 with research-based learning, including 1 mandatory and 1 optional group consultations with instructors, as well as self-organised group work and presentation of a study project. In Module 3, participants continue the summer school through working further with the developed outlines for common study projects and thus work together in groups online. The instructors of the summer school are available online to provide professional supervision for the work on these study projects (research-based teaching & learning). Students finish Module 3 with online group presentations of their common study projects. Students completing modules 1 + 2 + 3 receive 9 ECTS.
Scholarship
There is no registration fee. Transportation, accommodation, and meal costs fall under the participants’ responsibility.
Students and doctoral candidates from Gdańsk Tech can obtain a scholarship from the Erasmus+ program to participate in the course. The number of scholarships is limited (a maximum of 6 students/doctoral candidates from Gdańsk Tech can receive funding). The scholarship can be used to cover the portion of the course held in Berlin (July 28th - August 3rd). The scholarship rate is EUR 79 per day (i.e., 7 days x EUR 79 = EUR 553).
Students with special needs (those receiving social scholarships or individuals with disabilities) can receive additional funding for the trip. Moreover, those who choose to use green forms of transportation—such as a bus, train, and carpooling—can also receive extra funding for the trip.
The scholarship is awarded only to students who participate in both the online and on-site parts of the course. To receive the scholarship, students will need to go through the Erasmus+ mobility procedure (See the details here).
