The 47th Seminar of Advanced Materials Center
We warmly invite you to the 47th seminar of the Advanced Materials Center, which will take place on September 17th, 2026 (Thursday) at 1:00 p.m. in Auditorium 2 (building 42, WETI B).
Prof. Frank Hegmann from University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, will present a talk entitled "Imaging ultrafast phenomena on the nanoscale".
Frank Hegmann received his PhD in Physics from McMaster University in 1994 and then worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Terahertz Science and Technology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In 1997 he joined the Department of Physics at the University of Alberta and established the Ultrafast Spectroscopy Lab and Ultrafast Nanotools Lab for studying ultrafast phenomena in materials and devices using femtosecond laser sources and time-resolved terahertz (THz) pulse spectroscopy. From 2015 to 2019 he was the AITF strategic Chair in Terahertz Science and Technology. His current research interests include ultrafast THz spectroscopy of nanomaterials, THz-STM, terahertz nonlinear dynamics in semiconductors, and ultrafast electron microscopy.
After the seminar, we traditionally invite you for pizza!

Abstract:
The ability to directly probe ultrafast phenomena on the nanoscale is essential to our understanding of excitation dynamics in materials and in the development of new device technologies. However, achieving this capability has been challenging and is the focus of research in many labs around the world. Terahertz scanning tunneling microscopy, or THz-STM, is a powerful new technique that enables direct imaging of sub-picosecond dynamics in materials down to the atomic scale. After describing various ultrafast nanoscale probes, this talk will discuss how THz-STM works and how it can provide new insight into ultrafast nanoscale dynamics of materials and devices.
