Below you will find information regarding the extension of studies at the SDW and the deadline for submitting the doctoral dissertation.
The rules in this area may vary depending on the edition of the "Implementation Doctorate" program, in accordance with the provisions of agreements concluded between Gdańsk Tech and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. Please select the information relevant to your edition of the program.
A doctoral student requesting an extension for submitting their doctoral dissertation should:
- complete all courses and other educational components required by the curriculum of the Implementation Doctoral School in the discipline in which they are being trained
- present a certificate confirming knowledge of a foreign language at a minimum B2 level.
- pass the doctoral exam or have a set date for the exam
According to § 21 of the Regulations of the Implementation Doctoral School, the Director of the School may, at the doctoral student's request and upon the promoter's opinion, extend the deadline for submitting the doctoral dissertation once, but not longer than one year.
The extension of the dissertation submission deadline may not exceed a total period of two years.
An extension of the dissertation submission deadline means an extension of education at the Implementation Doctoral School, i.e., the doctoral student retains all doctoral student rights. However, pursuant to Article 209 paragraph 2 of the Act on Higher Education and Science, "the total period of receiving a doctoral scholarship in doctoral schools cannot exceed 4 years." This means that if the doctoral student has already received a doctoral scholarship for 4 years, they will not receive a scholarship during the extended education period.
According to § 21 of the Regulations of the Implementation Doctoral School:
A doctoral student may extend the deadline for submitting the doctoral dissertation, particularly in the case of:
- the need to conduct additional scientific research,
- delays resulting from failures of research equipment,
- temporary lack of materials for experimental work,
- lengthy procurement procedures,
- scientific internship,
- work on preparing a significant publication,
- editing the doctoral dissertation.
The application for extension of the doctoral dissertation submission deadline should be submitted before the end of the education period, but after the mid-term evaluation, and must include the proposed dissertation submission date.
The application for an extension of the dissertation submission deadline should include:
- an updated individual research plan containing a detailed schedule for completing the remaining tasks related to preparing the doctoral dissertation and a list of the doctoral student's research achievements,
- the promoter’s opinion,
- opinions of the auxiliary supervisor,
- a copy of the doctoral exam protocol
The update of the Individual Research Plan should be initiated via Moja PG -> e-documents.
Without an updated Individual Research Plan, the application will not be considered.
After obtaining the approval of the Director of the Implementation Doctoral School for the extension of the doctoral dissertation submission deadline, the next step will be for the University to submit the aforementioned application to the Ministry, where the Minister of Science and Higher Education (MNISW) will consider the applications individually! The application must be submitted to MNISW no later than 30 days before the end of the educational period (date given in the most recently approved IRP).
In justified cases, the application may be approved.
