Two scientists from Gdańsk Tech have been appointed to the Committee on Water Science and Management

The Committee for Water Science and Management
The Committee for Water Science and Management at the Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences consists of 34 experts from various scientific disciplines, including environmental engineering, meteorology and water management, geophysics, hydraulic engineering, oceanology and fire science. Among them are Professor Adam Szymkiewicz and Professor Michał Szydłowski from Gdańsk University of Technology.

The Committee's tasks include providing expert assistance to decision-makers on issues related to the prevention of flood risks and the management of the consequences of such events, as well as proposing effective solutions for the protection of river basins against flood disasters in a way that is compatible with human and natural needs. In addition, the Committee's experts will be involved in raising the profile of water science both in Poland and in international cooperation.

All activities will be carried out in cooperation with other scientific and problem committees of the Polish Academy of Sciences, scientific associations, universities, governmental and non-governmental institutions and IAHR - International Association for Engineering and Environmental Research.

Water problems, manifested by periodic water shortages and surpluses, are becoming increasingly common in Poland. As a result of climate change, pressure for intensive use of agricultural land and pollution of the original environment, we are witnessing the disappearance of springs, riparian and wetland habitats in the landscape. These processes require both corrective and preventive action.
