The interdisciplinary team will be formed as a result of collaboration between experts from Gdańsk Tech, the Medical University of Gdańsk, and Gemini Polska. The purpose of this newly established tripartite agreement is to jointly conduct research and development projects that—through the use of modern technologies—will contribute to improving the health of Poles. Scientists from Gdańsk Tech will be involved in preparing proposals for IT solutions.

The ceremonial signing of the letter of intent took place on March 4 at the Medical University of Gdańsk. Gdańsk Tech was represented by Prof. PhD DSc Eng. Janusz Nieznański, Vice-Rector for Internationalization and Innovation; on behalf of the Medical University of Gdańsk, Prof. PhD DSc Michał Markuszewski, Vice-Rector for Science, was present; and representing Gemini Polska were Artur Łakomiec, President of the Management Board, and Artur Sznek, Member of the Management Board.

The joint activities primarily involve creating research and development teams focused on the prevention and promotion of health using modern technologies in e-health, as well as providing employees, students, and doctoral candidates with tools and knowledge useful for creating and implementing innovative technological solutions in the field of pharmaceutical care.

The first pilot project will concern support for patients starting a new medication for arterial hypertension. Pharmacists from Gemini Polska, together with experts from the Medical University of Gdańsk, will develop a procedure standard that can be implemented within pharmaceutical care.

– The need to develop qualitative standards for pharmaceutical services is particularly relevant today. In times of limited access to clinics and doctors, pharmacists can assist by providing patients with professional care and essential substantive support. Our collaboration aims to develop effective solutions that will be optimal considering the challenges faced by the Polish healthcare system. As a research university, we have the potential and experience in this area. I am convinced that the engagement of the scientific community of the Medical University of Gdańsk in pilot and research and development projects can bring significant value – says Prof. PhD DSc Michał Markuszewski, Vice-Rector for Science at the Medical University of Gdańsk.

Scientists from Gdańsk Tech will be involved in preparing proposals for IT solutions supporting this process.

– Healthcare needs tools that, on the one hand, ensure the security of processed data, and on the other, enhance the integration of various aspects of care. New technologies can and should support healthcare in acquiring, collecting, and analyzing data using artificial intelligence, cloud technologies, mobile applications, embedded systems, etc. Within the partnership with the Medical University of Gdańsk and Gemini Polska, we will seek the best technological solutions that meet the expectations of medical care providers and—what is especially important—patients. We anticipate broad participation of academic staff and students in this process – comments Prof. PhD DSc Eng. Janusz Nieznański, Vice-Rector for Internationalization and Innovation at Gdańsk Tech.

Further joint initiatives will be related to the development of technologies supporting patient care and improving data processing security, as well as limiting the negative effects of medication overuse (polypharmacy) or drug interactions. The initiators of the project also intend to focus on restoring the health of Poles after the pandemic, particularly within the 40+ age group and patients suffering from chronic diseases.

– Focus on the patient and their needs is inherent in Gemini Polska’s mission. Therefore, we engage in projects that allow the healthcare system to develop. Pharmaceutical care, referred to among others in the pharmaceutical profession act recently signed by the President of the Republic of Poland, is an important response to current challenges. New technologies, in turn, are the right move toward the future – says Artur Łakomiec, President of the Management Board of Gemini Polska.

– Pharmacists constitute a professional group that, on principles of complementarity with doctors and other medical personnel, should participate in patient care. They can assist doctors in monitoring drug therapies and educating patients on health prevention. For this purpose, it is essential to develop intelligent, functional, and secure digital tools. I believe that our cooperation with excellent specialists and experts from Gdańsk Tech and the Medical University of Gdańsk is precisely a step in that direction – adds Artur Sznek, Member of the Management Board of Gemini Polska.
