Prof. Andrzej Czyżewski, Head of the Department of Multimedia Systems at the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics, is the protagonist of the latest volume in the “Outstanding Pomeranians” series. The book series presents figures whose lives, work, and achievements have left a lasting mark on the history of Pomerania. The publication was authored by Sławomir Siezieniewski. On Thursday, June 11, a book promotion event was held at the Old Town Hall in Gdańsk.

The book “Andrzej Czyżewski. When Science Meets Imagination” was published by Wydawnictwo Region. It takes the form of an extensive interview conducted with Prof. Czyżewski by the well-known Tri-City journalist Sławomir Siezieniewski. As the publisher writes:

“This is the story of a journey from youthful fascination with electronics to world-class science, teamwork, mentors, patents, inventions, and technologies that help people. The book features, among others, CyberEye, Usto-Mysz, an intensity acoustic probe, medical, acoustic and biometric solutions, as well as reflections on the responsible development of artificial intelligence. Prof. Czyżewski is included among the most frequently cited scientists according to the World’s TOP 2% Scientists ranking, holds 34 patents, and is the author of nearly 600 publications.”

On Thursday, June 11, a promotional event for the book was held at the Baltic Sea Cultural Centre in the Old Town Hall. During the event, discussions focused on the book itself and its contents – Prof. Czyżewski’s scientific career, his passions and interests, private life, and, above all, his devotion to science.

– My technical interests appeared when I was about 12 years old. Initially, it was chemistry, which I mostly associated with experiments and learning. Since obtaining chemical reagents was difficult, I turned towards color photography, which also had a rather complicated photochemical process. I can say that electronics saved me from spending my youth amidst chemical fumes and the darkness of the darkroom – said Prof. Andrzej Czyżewski during the meeting. – I had a hunch that electronics would be the driving force behind the development of civilization. Even back then, when I was in my early teens, it was developing very rapidly.

Besides the key figures of the evening – Prof. Andrzej Czyżewski and Sławomir Siezieniewski – the event was attended by: Prof. Dariusz Mikielewicz, Vice-Rector for Research, Prof. Henryk Krawczyk, Rector of Gdańsk Tech from 2008 to 2016, Prof. Jacek Stefański, Dean of the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics, PhD Zbigniew Canowiecki, President of Employers of Pomerania, who chaired the meeting, representatives of the scientific and economic communities, family and friends, as well as individuals interested in science and Gdańsk. Excerpts from the book were read by Zbigniew Jankowski.
