On Saturday, 26 September, commemorative plaques dedicated to PhD Marianna Sankiewicz and Gustaw Budzyński – a married couple and long-time employees of Gdańsk Tech – will be unveiled at 8 Fiszera Street in Gdańsk. The ceremony will begin at 12:00 PM. The initiative to commemorate them was undertaken by the Historical Commission of the Gdańsk Tech Alumni Association.

Marianna Sankiewicz was a longtime lecturer at Gdańsk Tech and served, among other roles, as the university's vice-rector. She was born on September 26, 1921, which is why the ceremony will take place exactly on the 105th anniversary of her birth.

The second plaque is dedicated to her husband, Gustaw Budzyński – a soldier of the Home Army, commander of the “Żniwiarz” company during the Warsaw Uprising, a political prisoner during the Stalinist period, and later a scientist and lecturer at Gdańsk Tech. At the university, he established the electroacoustics program at the then Faculty of Telecommunications.

– Marianna Sankiewicz and Gustaw Budzyński are important figures in the history of Gdańsk Tech and Gdańsk. We want to remember the people who helped shape the academic community, were socially engaged, and left a lasting legacy. This is the purpose of the commemorative plaque initiative by the Historical Commission of the Gdańsk Tech Alumni Association – says Jerzy Bogdanis from the SAPG Historical Commission.

After the unveiling of the plaques, around 12:30 PM, participants will proceed to Auditorium No. 2 in the WETI A building of Gdańsk Tech, named after Marianna Sankiewicz and Gustaw Budzyński. The transition will be accompanied by Detko Band playing New Orleans music.

In the auditorium, the final screening of the film “Zielony Atrament” will take place, along with commentary from its creators. At 2:00 PM, Prof. Piotr Szczuko will deliver a lecture titled “Half-jokingly, Half-seriously about Sound Engineering and AI.”

The event will conclude with a birthday cake for Marianna Sankiewicz and a group photo.

The plaques were created as part of the activities of the Monument Commission of the City of Gdańsk. The initiative for their creation came from the Historical Commission of the Gdańsk Tech Alumni Association, which works to commemorate scholars, alumni, and social activists connected with Gdańsk and Gdańsk Tech.
