Rockets, Luminescent Hydrogels, and Dual-Use Technologies. Pomeranian Researchers’ Night at Gdańsk Tech
Can a hydrogel combat bacteria while being safe for humans? How is 3D printing used in defense technologies? Is it possible to photograph the Milky Way from the Gdańsk Tech campus? Among other things, answers to these questions will be available on September 25 during the Pomeranian Researchers' Night at Gdańsk Tech.
Lectures, demonstrations, and workshops prepared by scientists and students will take place on the Gdańsk Tech campus.
Dual-use technologies and new materials
One of the topics of this year’s edition will be dual-use technologies, i.e., solutions used both for civilian and defense purposes. During the lecture “From model to mission – 3D printing in defense and dual-use technologies,” Dr. Eng. Natalia Stawicka-Morawska will show how a digital design can be transformed into a finished component and where such solutions find their applications.
– We want to showcase the various faces of science at Gdańsk Tech. The program includes material technologies, dual-use solutions, astronomy, rescue operations, and activities related to communication. It was important to us to prepare proposals for people of different ages and to give participants the opportunity to see science in practice – says Prof. Aleksandra Mielewczyk-Gryń, coordinator of the Pomeranian Researchers’ Night at Gdańsk Tech.
The program also includes a lecture titled “Lethal to bacteria, safe for us? Hydrogel biomaterials for special tasks.” Dr. Eng. Marcin Wekweit will talk about materials that inhibit bacterial growth and their potential applications.
At the “PoliGLOW – Create Your Own Glowing Hydrogels!” station prepared by the TECHPOL Scientific Circle, visitors will be able to observe fluorescence and the effects of UV light, create glowing slime, and take a closer look at 3D printing.
Participants will also get a look inside materials without destroying them. During the demonstration dedicated to micro-computed tomography, they will see how three-dimensional images are created using X-ray radiation.
Rocket, Astrophotography, and Rescue
The Astrophysics Scientific Circle at Gdańsk Tech will organize “Night under the Sky.” The program includes, among others, a reusable rocket launch, a presentation on spacetime, creating star maps, and astronomical observations.
A separate station will be dedicated to astrophotography. Participants will check whether it is possible to photograph the Milky Way from the Gdańsk Tech campus.
In the parking lot in front of the Nanotechnology Center A, a mobile command station of the Volunteer Search and Rescue Service will also appear. Visitors will be able to see equipment, communication systems, and tools used during search operations and learn about the coordination of missing persons searches.
Some events require prior registration.
The full program of Gdańsk Tech events and registration can be found on the Pomeranian Researchers’ Night website.
