PhD Eng. Sebastian Cygert from Gdańsk Tech has been named among the laureates of the POLITYKA Scientific Awards 2026. He was awarded in the category of technical sciences for his research on the safety and reliability of artificial intelligence systems.

The scientist works at the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics at Gdańsk Tech. He also heads the Department of Safety and Transparency of Artificial Intelligence at the Artificial Intelligence Safety Research Center, NASK – National Research Institute. In addition, he is a member of the scientific panel at the EU AI Office, supporting the implementation of European regulations.

PhD Eng. Sebastian Cygert conducts research on the safety and reliability of AI systems in fields where errors have real consequences – for example, in medicine. He focuses on creating reliable, robust, and adaptable machine learning models capable of effective operation in changing environments. Furthermore, in collaboration with the Medical University of Gdańsk, he co-developed methods supporting cancer diagnostics based on liquid biopsy.

He is a scholarship holder of the Kościuszko Foundation (research stay at New York University). He served as a scientific expert at Amazon, where he participated, among others, in work on the visual perception system for the autonomous Amazon Scout robot and speech synthesis for the Alexa voice assistant.

He has been awarded, among others, the Rector’s Award of Gdańsk Tech at first and third degree for scientific achievements (2025 and 2026), the Rector’s Award for Young Researchers at Gdańsk Tech (2024), and the Innovation Award (at ICCV 2023). He is the first representative of Gdańsk Tech admitted to the ELLIS Society, a network of excellence gathering leading researchers in the field of artificial intelligence in Europe.

His articles have been published at the most prestigious AI conferences (including NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR).
