Students of Gdańsk University of Technology will build dog houses and shelters for cats using, among other things, materials left over from construction projects. The “Help for a Four-Legged Friend” initiative will take place on 4 November on the Gdańsk Tech campus. Companies are invited to contribute materials, transport, tools or technical support. They can also form their own teams and take part in the construction work alongside students.

“Help for a Four-Legged Friend” combines support for animals with the responsible use of materials and engineering expertise. Surplus materials, end-of-line products and unused elements left over from construction projects can all be given a second life.

– We want to show that materials which are no longer needed after a project has been completed can still be put to very good use. Sometimes a few boards, a piece of timber or some insulation material are enough to build a safe shelter for a particular animal. That is why we are inviting both companies that can donate materials and those that would like to involve their employees directly in the construction work. We want this to be a truly joint initiative of students and the construction sector – says Anna Banaś, coordinator of the “Help for a Four-Legged Friend” initiative.

The materials needed include primarily timber, plywood and boards, insulation materials, roofing materials, membranes, fastening elements, paints and wood protection products. The organisers are also open to other suggestions.

Manufacturers of construction materials are also encouraged to get involved. The initiative can make use of production offcuts, surpluses, leftovers from cutting processes or elements with minor visual defects which are no longer suitable for regular sale but still retain their functional properties and can be safely used to build animal shelters.

Companies can also support the initiative in other ways, for example by providing transport, tools, practical assistance or technical expertise. They may also create their own team and join the students on 4 November to build shelters together.

Education will also be an important part of the event. The organisers plan to prepare short materials explaining how to build a proper shelter for a dog or cat so that it offers real protection against cold, moisture and wind.

Companies involved in the initiative will be featured in promotional materials prepared by Gdańsk University of Technology and the Pomeranian District Chamber of Civil Engineers, as well as during the event itself.
