Report on the activities of Gdańsk University of Technology for 2020

Creation of the Daniel Fahrenheit University Association, formation of a new Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology, a new strategy for the development of the university, the establishment of the Economic Convention at Gdańsk Tech, as well as educational challenges resulting from the epidemic situation - these were the most important initiatives and events at Gdańsk University of Technology in the past year. The Senate of the university approved the "Report on the activities of Gdańsk University of Technology for 2020", which was presented at the meeting by prof. Dariusz Mikielewicz, vice-rector for organization and development.

Science

In 2020, the number of scientific promotions increased: the title of professor was obtained by 11 scientists (compared to eight nominations in 2019), 56 researchers received the degree of habilitated doctor (36 titles in 2019), and the group of young scientists increased by 49 doctoral students.

Didactic Fridays - summary of the training cycle for academic teachers

Didactic Fridays
Eight months of meetings, 275 participants, 34 topics, 58 hours of methodological training, 32 hours of workshops and 12 hours of training on the use of the e-learning platform - on Friday, 18 June, in the Hydromechanics building, the final of the first edition of the training program for Gdańsk University of Technology teachers "Didactic Fridays" took place, conducted by the Center for Modern Education at Gdańsk Tech.

– I would like to congratulate all training participants who took the first step towards making the didactics better and more interesting. You are the foundation of this university. In order to obtain a sufficient number of good doctoral students, the university needs good masters, and for the masters to be good, we need the foundations provided by teachers, i.e. the best possible quality classes and people who want to conduct them – emphasized prof.

Prestigious FPS scholarships for researchers from Gdańsk Tech

Beata Zima, PhD, Eng. from the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Paulina Parcheta-Szwindowska, PhD, Eng. from the Faculty of Chemistry and PhD student, MSc. Karolina Górnicka from the Faculty of Applied Physics and Mathematics are among the prestigious winners of the START scholarship program of the Foundation for the Development of Polish Science.

Beata Zima, PhD, Eng. is an assistant professor at the Department of Structural Mechanics (FC&EE). Her greatest achievements so far include the development of a number of algorithms for detecting, locating and estimating the size of damage in elements of engineering structures.

Representatives of Pomeranian universities are members of the ministerial Council

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Development, Labor and Technology Jarosław Gowin appointed the Council for the Plan for Labour and Economic Development - one of the key projects in the current activities of the ministry. The Council was composed of representatives of Pomeranian universities, including the Fahrenheit University Association in Gdańsk.  

The task of the Council will be, among others, identifying and analyzing issues related to the implementation of the Plan for Work and Development, as well as developing and giving opinions on proposed substantive, legal and organizational solutions that fit into the Plan. 32 people were nominated to the Council, including representatives of leading Polish universities, the Polish Academy of Sciences and research institutes.

Czerwona Róża (Red Rose) 2021 - the winners at the university stage were chosen

The best student and the best research club selected at the university stage of the Czerwona Róża (Red Rose) 2021 competition.  

On 15 June 2021, the university stage of the Czerwona Róża (Red Rose) 2021 Competition ended. The winners were selected in the categories: "best student" and "best research club" at Gdańsk University of Technology. They will represent the university during the main stage of the competition – 15 November 2021.

Over one million zlotys for increasing the knowledge and technology transfer in the Palladium program

Eight projects in the area of increasing the knowledge and technology transfer, dedicated to the development of new or increasing the attractiveness of the existing research services provided by Gdańsk University of Technology received funding under the Palladium Supporting New R&D Services program for a total value of over PLN 1 million.  

11 applications were submitted for the completed call for proposals, of which the following projects received funding:

1. Increasing the research capacity of the Car Tires Testing Laboratory

Project leader: prof. Jerzy Ejsmont, PhD, DSc, Eng. FME&ST - co-financing: PLN 150,000

2. Research station for measuring the amount of hydrogen in engineering materials

Seminar of the Baltic Sea Region University Network

On 11 June 2021, another seminar of the Baltic Sea Region University Network - BSRUN (Baltic Sea Region University Network) was held. "University Management Reforms in Poland - Expectations and Experiences".

The topic of the seminar was sparked by the interest of Latvian partners who are trying to introduce a new law on higher education in their country. At this stage, many questions and doubts arose regarding, for example, defining the competences and powers of University Councils. Prof. Dariusz Mikielewicz, vice-rector for organization and development invited prof. Tomasz Klimczuk, a member of the University Council and prof. Maciej Duszczyk, chairman of the University Council of the University of Gdańsk to take part in the meeting.

100 vacancies for candidates. Admission to the Doctoral School

On June 21, the enrollment for the Doctoral School at Gdańsk University of Technology, run jointly with two institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Gdańsk - Institute of Fluid-Flow Machinery and Institute of Hydro-Engineering, started. Candidates can apply for the program in Gdańsk Tech application system until Thursday, July 8, at 9 a.m. CEST

The school offers free doctoral training in English in 12 disciplines.
