The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is conducted by the Supreme Council for Scientific Research in Madrid (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas). Webometrics is a ranking that primarily takes into account the presence and recognition of universities in the network, although it is not a ranking of university websites. It is not intended to judge websites appearance, usefulness or popularity as measured by the number of visits or visitors. The aim of the Webometrics ranking is to increase the presence of academic institutions and research on the Internet, supporting all Open Access projects and encouraging universities and scientists to make their presence in the network reflecting the actual state of their activities. The webometric indicators, as emphasized by the authors of the ranking, also measure - indirectly - other university missions, such as teaching or the ‘third mission’, taking into account not only the scientific impact of the university's activities, but also the economic importance of technology transfer to industry or social commitment.
