Today's changes in the research ecosystem are driven by many factors, such as technological advances and challenges to problems of social existence,

joined by dynamic transformations caused by (among other things):

  • unpredictable global threats like COVID-19
  • geopolitical uncertainties and tensions
  • China's increasing role in global research advances

Based on an extensive literature review and consultations with experts and scientists from around the world, Elsevier* has attempted to create a vision of how science will evolve over the next 10 years. Summary of key research results >>>

Some of the key findings indicate

The importance of the technological revolution

  • the role of big data as a driver of research development
  • shaping science through the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning tools across multiple disciplines, e.g., to analyze results, significant growth in use has been noted so far in the areas of chemistry and material science (interestingly, the use of AI is also being considered in peer review processes - assessing the value and innovation of research outputs when reviewing scientific articles)
  • it was noted that despite the potential of Blockchain within open science, the technology is not promising
  • augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are seen as fields for creating key learning tools

Changing the way scientists work

  • new technologies are transforming research activities
  • the work model will become increasingly flexible and thus productive
  • collaboration will drive progress in science

Changing the academic activity

  • educational institutions will move away from the classic teaching model
  • EdTech will play an important role in higher education
