Excento - special purpose vehicle of Gdańsk University of Technology and the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone have signed a cooperation agreement under which the Protolab II prototype facility will be built in the Gdańsk Science and Technology Park.

- By expanding Protolab in cooperation with the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone, we co-create an ecosystem friendly to the development of new technologies and original engineering projects. The Protolab II laboratory will be a fully equipped technical workshop, enabling the construction of prototypes using wood and metal processing, as well as 3D printing - explains Krzysztof Malicki, president of Excento.

One of the main assumptions of Protolab's operation is its 24/7 availability to users. This will also be the case with space at the GSTP. The laboratory will be available for example to students and academics of Gdańsk University of Technology and members of interdisciplinary teams participating in the e-Pionier project conducted by Excento, upon registration.

The equipment of Protolab II at GSTP will complement the equipment available in the first Protolab located at Gdańsk University of Technology. The equipment includes, among others: lathes, milling machines, cutters and an FDM printer. Profiting from the capabilities of both laboratories, users will be able to independently, e.g. first create components, and then construct a robot prototype. The second Protolab is scheduled to be launched in the fourth quarter of 2020.

Protolab II will also be part of the ‘Spacemaker’ area, which is being built in the Gdańsk Science and Technology Park.

- ‘Spacemaker’ is a new place created for startups, innovative companies and inventors who will be able to implement their unconventional ideas on an area of 400 m². The space will be divided into several parts. One of them will include Protolab II, and the others will include the Digital Innovation Hub related to Industry 4.0, implemented by VoiceLab in cooperation with the Skalp Robotics Association, and boxes where innovators will be able to carry out some of their individual work on prototypes - explains Przemysław Sztandera, president of the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone.

In the coming months, Excento will additionally expand the Protolab at Gdańsk University of Technology with further thematic modules, i.e. a module dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI), space technologies and augmented reality (VR) technologies.
