PhD students from abroad received Daniel Fahrenheit Scholarships

Gilvana Pereira Siqueira from the Federal University of Uberlândia, Nathalia Pavan from the Universidade Estadual Paulista and Yimer Mekonnen Kasse from Ghent University are this year's laureates of the Daniel Fahrenheit Scholarship from the Mayor of Gdańsk for the best PhD students from abroad. The award ceremony took place on 14 February at the City Hall in Gdańsk

This is the 3rd edition of the scholarship programme for PhD students from abroad conducting interdisciplinary research. The Mayor of Gdańsk, in agreement with Fahrenheit Universities, funded prestigious scientific scholarships named after Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, for the three best doctoral students.

In this year's edition of the program, 38 percent of the applying doctoral students are citizens of Asian countries, and 23 percent come from Brazil. The remaining applications were submitted by people from Hungary, China, Slovenia and Ethiopia. Most of them are currently studying in Europe, including Spain, Belgium, Norway and Italy.

The selection of the winners was based on the decision of the Competition Committee composed of representatives of Fahrenheit Universities and the Department of Education of the City Office in Gdańsk. The Competition Committee selected the winners from among 12 candidates.

The winners of this Year's Edition:

Gilvana Pereira Siqueira, a Brazilian student from the Federal University of Uberlândia. Her research focuses on the use of sustainable materials for the production of modern electrochemical sensors suitable for 3D printing.

Host university: Gdańsk University of Technology, Institute of Nanotechnology and Materials Engineering, supervisor: prof. Jacek Ryl.

Nathalia Pavan from Universidade Estadual Paulista in Brazil. During the internship, she plans to explore theoretical approaches to characterizing potential ligands binding to fatty acid binding sites in human serum albumin.

Host university: University of Gdańsk, Faculty of Chemistry, supervisor: prof. Sergey Samsonov, PhD, DSc.

Yimer Mekonnen Kasse, Ethiopian from Ghent University in Belgium. The aim of his research is the sustainable removal of anthelmintics as emerging environmental contaminants of high concern.

Host university: University of Gdańsk, Faculty of Pharmacy, supervisor: prof. Bartosz Wielgomas.

Benefits for Scholarship Recipients

The scholarship is intended for young scientists who are preparing a doctoral dissertation at a foreign university, are authors or co-authors of a scientific publication and want to pursue their scientific interests at one of Fahrenheit's Universities.

The scholarship recipients began their internship at the beginning of this year and will spend up to 12 months at Gdańsk universities. During this time, they will conduct interdisciplinary research as part of their doctoral thesis. For the duration of the scholarship, young scientists are provided with:

  • free accommodation in 3 apartments provided to the Union of Universities by Gdańskie Nieruchomości (Fahrenheit Universities cover the costs of utilities and operation);
  • a monthly scholarship in the amount of PLN 6,500 (net) per month;
  • reimbursement of travel expenses up to PLN 6,500.

– The Fahrenheit Scholarship is an example of Gdańsk's openness, but also a guarantee of further progress in science and a higher level of education. The third edition of the scholarship proves that this is a chance for development for students from all over the world – said the Mayor Aleksandra Dulkiewicz. – We want doctoral students to feel at home in Gdańsk and not only gain knowledge here, but also draw inspiration, develop their passions and create valuable relationships. I hope that your stay in Gdańsk will contribute to your development, and I am confident that your successes will reflect positively on our city.

The ceremony was also attended by notable personalities: prof. Piotr Stepnowski, chairman of the Assembly of the Union of Universities in Gdańsk named after Daniel Fahrenheit, rector of the University of Gdańsk; prof. Michał Markuszewski, rector of the Medical University of Gdańsk, prof. Krzysztof Wilde, rector of Gdańsk University of Technology and prof. Adriana Zaleska-Medyńska, director of FarU, the Union of Universities in Gdańsk named after Daniel Fahrenheit (University of Gdańsk).

– A year-long stay of doctoral students at our universities allows for establishing cooperation with foreign research centers or strengthening existing partnerships. What is more, it is also an opportunity to develop new competences in our teams: ranging from knowledge transfer to the development of soft skills, such as working in an international, multicultural teams, managing such teams or improving knowledge of foreign languages – explained prof. Adriana Zaleska-Medyńska.
