Open Access Week 2023

Open Access Week 2023
| October 23-29, 2023

"Community over Commercialization" is the theme for this year’s International Open Access Week (October 23-29). This theme encourages a candid conversation about which approaches to open scholarship prioritize the best interests of the public and the academic community and which do not.

Adopted by its 193 Member States, the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science highlights the need to prioritize community over commercialization in its calls for the prevention of "inequitable extraction of profit from publicly funded scientific activities" and support for "non-commercial publishing models and collaborative publishing models with no article processing charges." By focusing on these areas, we can achieve the original vision outlined when open access was first defined: "an old tradition and a new technology have converged to make possible an unprecedented public good."

Gdańsk University of Technology Library will present a series of events with topics related to open publishing, open science and data sharing such as:

Book for October

"Book for..." is a joint, cyclical action of the Gdańsk Tech Library and the Promotion and Press Release Office, in which branches reading rooms recommend some exceptional reads from their resources. The October list includes print and electronic publications related to this year's theme “Community over Commercialization”, as well as books that explain the idea of open science. We invite you to borrow books and wish you a pleasant reading experience!

Open Access in social media

An information campaign on the Gdańsk Tech Library's Facebook profile, where we encourage you to follow a series of posts dedicated to non-commercial platforms that support collaboration between members of the scientific community. In the virtual space, we will try to introduce the topic of preprint repositories, but we also invite you to visit us in the Main Building, where the librarians have prepared a promotional stand with small gifts.
