For the Student Government of Gdańsk University of Technology the end of the year means: firstly - elections for a new term, and secondly - decisions of internal and national plebiscites in which the best students, research clubs and student projects are awarded. This year, SGGUT received three prestigious awards.

Despite the difficulties resulting from the coronavirus pandemic, the Student Government of Gdańsk University of Technology did not stop its activities and organized a number of online events, worked on study programs, and supported the student community in various ways.

Every year, each local government official waits for three main events: Golden Lions (a gala organized by the SGGUT, in which projects of circles and organizations operating within the university are awarded), a Student Environment Gala organized by the Forum of Technical Universities and the ProJuvenes gala - organized by the Students' Parliament of the Republic of Poland.

Unfortunately, due to epidemic situation, the Golden Lions gala could not be held this year, but the budget allocated to the organization of the gala and the awards will go to research circles to support their activities. However, two other plebiscites have already ended.

Prestigious awards for SGGUT

The FUT Student Community Gala is a plebiscite organized every year, awarding student projects of Polish Universities of Technology. This year, prizes were awarded to two local government projects: The Grand Online Tournament, awarded in the ‘Online Time Animation’ category, and the ‘Buddy packs, University sends’ campaign, awarded in the ‘Student Government Support’ category. This action also gained recognition in the ProJuvenes competition, winning the ‘Studies without barriers’ category last Sunday.

What are the SGGUT’s initiatives about?

The Grand Online Tournament was an event that took place at the very beginning of the pandemic. Its aim was to introduce some entertainment into the free time during the spring lockdown and nationwide isolation. The Government then held five tournaments in computer games: The Sims, League of Legends, Minecraft and Charades. Over 500 participants from all over the country took part in the entire cycle, and the event won nationwide recognition.

In turn, the action ‘Buddy packs, University sends’ was addressed to the residents of student houses who left their rooms during the first wave of the pandemic. Many of them initially assumed that the return to the dormitories would take place relatively quickly, but it did not happen so, and many students left important things in their rooms.

Through joint efforts of the SGGUT, university authorities and people who stayed in the dormitories, it was possible to carry out the campaign of packing and shipping the necessary things left behind. A person who went back to their place of residence sent a list of needed things to a ‘buddy’ from the dorm, who packed those things into cardboard boxes prepared by the university. The packed items were then transported by courier directly to the owner, which prevented unnecessary - from an epidemic point of view - student journeys and endangering their families, employees and residents of student houses.
